Whats the deal with Ranked placements?

I completed my 10 placement games and ended up performing abysmally, embarrassingly even… I believe I went 74k-152d with a 3-7 w/l record. I ended up being placed in Diamond 1…How!? There are 31 ranks in this game, 6 levels per Bronze through Diamond, plus Onyx. You’re telling me I did well enough with that stat line to be in the 25th tier?

I had at least 5 Onyx players (including the ones on my teams obviously) in every game I played. Could that be the reason? Did they essential make the game grade me on a curve or something? How bad would I have to do to be placed in the Bronze tier?

Just seen your other post, welcome to the club mate.
I’m also often matched against Onyx and had a similar performance in placement matches. Got ranked in Plat 1 in Crossplay and Diamond 1 in Solo/Duo Controller even though I should’ve never been placed up there.

The ranking system is pretty bad in a sense that it’s almost impossible to rank down until you’re close to Onyx. It probably also messes with selecting “proper skilled players” to your and the enemy team.

Preeeeeeeettty bad, lol.

Which says a lot - I see people in Diamond matches that don’t even pull the trigger point-blank from enemies or walk around like they are at a safari.

First they draw names out of a hat from the list of players in that game, then they when your name is picked they roll a single die to see how many cards they place in your deck. Once you have your deck determined, they start drawing cards. If the first card they draw is an even number, you rank up. If the first card they draw is an odd number, they draw again. If they draw an even number the second time, you rank up, but if the second card they draw is an odd number, they have to roll the dice again. This time if they roll an even number, you rank up. If they roll an odd number you still rank up. Unless youre in onyx tier. If youre in onyx and they roll an odd number at this point, you rank down : (

In other words, it makes no sense to me or anyone who i’ve talked to about it.

Yes, it’s probably because you got a few wins against onyx tier players. I think that would have bypassed bronze/silver/gold entirely

I placed gold after going 5-5 w/l in my placement matches. I don’t think I ever played against onyx though

It’s because your social MMR also plays into who you face in Ranked.

Well, I don’t know. I got placed GOLD III. Then learning and playing I ranked up until Platinum 1. I feel correctly placed. Maybe your stats overall aren’t that bad.

From my point of view it feels like a correct learning curve.
