Just flat out the best period? Not talking just campaign, multiplayer, graphics, story, advertising campaign, or anything else?

ODST. loved the streets of mombasa, loved the squad - every single one of them, loved the back-backstory told in the audiomessages, loved the mood, loved the music… perfect game.

Halo CE: The entry point. The game that changed the FPS genre.
Halo 2: Best multiplayer, best online experience.
Halo 3: The all-rounder. Unlike Halo: CE and Halo 2 this game did everything good, but nothing brilliant. Nothing stood out, like CE’s campaign or H2’s MP did. Added Forge and theatre. Two things you rarely see on a console game, especially in '07. Very welcome additions.
ODST: Best campaign
Reach: Pretty much the same as Halo 3. Forge is better than ever. Not as fun as the trilogy but still much more playable online than Halo 3 simply due to hitscan and a better netcode. Very pretty, and adds a lot of customisable features, but adds nothing of great value to Halo’s core gameplay. (other then trying to tear it to shreds) The gameplay, the ‘30 seconds of fun’ is worse than a certain game released in 2001.
But my personal favourite would be Halo 2.
Halo CE started it all, so it always will have a place in my heart. Restarting the campaign every now and then is still as fun now as it was back then. And meeting the flood for the first time was one of the most intense moments I’ve felt in a game.
Halo 2 was the first time I really noticed MP. I know that some hated how the campaign ended abrubtly (it caught me off guard as well; I was ready to play another mission when the credits popped up), but it was a great ride and getting to play as an Elite was a nice touch. Throw in a civil war amongst the Covenant just for good measure.
Halo 3 was just epic to me at the time. Jumping on the Scarab and invading it was fun and mixing in the Brutes was a nice touch as well, although it took getting used to having Elites on your side. It was the first time I really took to going online to play MP as well and it was fun, even if I stunk.
I didn’t play ODST (although I may buy it at some point just to experience it).
Halo: Reach is amazing. I knew how the story was going to end, but I’m still hooked. I think Bungie did a good job making the Covenant scary again, which was impressive considering how many games had featured them as enemies. The space flight was pretty neat as well. And all the options with MP and Forge blow my mind. Some of the gamers out there have made some awesome maps and games.
Halo 2 though is my vote for best Halo game. Idk, just stands out to me more than the rest.

Halo 3! It just had the best campaign and multiplayer for me, therefore making it the Halo game of my dreams.
I believe Halo: CE is the best since it was what started it all.
But my favorite Halo game has to be Halo 3 simply because I have three brothers and we didn’t have Xbox live at the time, so Halo 3 was pretty much our Goldeneye.

-Best Forge and Custom Games with the best custom maps and game modes that keep you and the entire community playing for years without losing replay value.
-Best theatre and file sharing, in my opinion.

-BY FAR the best maps, I’m only starting to appreciate the ‘bad’ maps now after Halo Reach and Halo 4 have come out.
Halo 3 is pure perfection and is probably the best game ever made, and the best game I’ll ever play.

This about sums up my opinion on this long-debated topic. A legit number 1 can’t really be picked because each one does something different better than the rest. Halo 1’s single player, Halo 2’s multiplayer, Halo 3’s features, ODST’s co-op, and Reach’s customization all make it difficult to justify a “best of” which is why it’s easier to just pick a favorite.
For me it’s Halo 3. There weren’t any great parts to that game, but there weren’t any bad parts either. It was just an all-around good game. The bad netcode and removal of hitscan were annoying, but not gamebreaking experiences like Reach’s bloom and certain AAs or Halo 4’s personal loadouts and instant respawn. It had a big focus of large-scale battles with campaign missions like the Ark and Covenant, and fantastic BTB multiplayer. Forge changed custom games forever, and Theater was just the icing on the cake for me. I just had a blast in that game, made great friends in that game, and it was the last game I couldn’t wait to get home and play everyday.
Call me what you want, but really I love Halo 4 most of all. It took pretty much everything I loved about Halo and brought it all together to one game. But if I had choose a past game, I would say Halo 2 for the Multiplayer. Oh man those were great times.
