As I’m sure we’re no doubt aware Halo seems to be going through a bit of a rough spot in terms of people playing it. Many are quick to attribute this to 343’s changes to which I say, maybe that’s not it? Well not all of it anyway. I think the real reason Halo has dropped in population is simply because the FPS genre is becoming more diverse. What if certain people only really played Halo back in the day because there were no other worthwhile console shooters in the market at that time? Because let’s face it most people don’t have the time, energy, or patience to maintain a PC.
Sure COD existed before Halo 3 came out but have you played Classic COD? Classic and Modern COD barely resemble each other. Halo getting lower populations was most likely a case of people realizing that they had wanted a game like COD all along but never realized it. Maybe the REAL reason people stopped playing 4 after BLOPS II came out wasn’t because it was too far from conventional Halo but because they felt like either A. Not enough was changed? or B. The wrong things were changed?
Here’s what might’ve went down for people who played 4 and moved on “Ya know I haven’t played Halo in a long time so maybe I’ll pick up 4, I don’t really remember why I stopped playing 3 to begin with.” a few hours later “Now I remember why I quit.”
If that’s not enough go to BrainScratchComms on youtube and check out their E3 2014 video BSC's E3 2014 Post Discussion - YouTube in which they wind up talking about COD. For those not willing to listen one of the commentators, Johnny states that his dad upgrades to the next COD because his buddies at work do. What if that’s the same reason that people wound up playing BLOPS II instead of Halo 4, peer pressure?
Or maybe I’m just crazy, who knows really.
P.S. MCC Online wasn’t the end of the world for me but it was still BS.

I agree with this. I’ve been playing Halo since 2001, yet I’ve played a slew of other shooters as well. I keep coming back to Halo. It might be because I’m pulling on the strings of nostalgia, but I’ve seriously loved it since it’s inception. I’m not one to complain about Halo. I adapt and persevere when a new one is released. I also think that people have a hard time with change. Why regurgitate the same game over and over? That doesn’t seem like it would be fun. I think developers have a hard time with balance in anything new. I also think that’s where most of the complaints and population drops spawn.
Change is good. If one doesn’t think so… they can always go back to their favorite game of the franchise. Why complain? Halo will keep moving forward and people will always complain.
The funny part is, all of the people that I’ve played with since 2001 have thoroughly enjoyed each new game (MM & Campaign). Maybe it’s because we’re older and aren’t as reluctant to accept new ideas?
My 2 cents.
For me Halo was always the story of the campaign, and once the ability to play campaigns with friends online became possible I was hooked. The evolution of the games online play has always been on par for me, but the elimination of the ranking system made it hard for me to have fun. In a way it forced me to do what I liked best and that was campaign, and Spartan Ops. I can only hope halo 5 will continues to evolve in campaign mode as well as graphically.

Agreed! Halo is about the story (campaign). I remember being in awe at the graphic fidelity increase on Halo 2, keeping in mind it was running on the same machine as C.E.
Bungie pushed it as far as it would go, poppy textures and all!
I hope Halo 5 (campaign) is as special as I think it’s going to be.
Completely on the same page. Halo’s strong spot for me as well is the story. The campaign is the big ticket, the multiplayer is for holding me over until the next game. Spartan Ops was -Yoinking!- genius if you ask me, putting a (kinda) parallel story in the multiplayer was definitely playing off their strengths IMO. I hope both storylines continue and would absolutely love to see single-optional but multiplayer-available games like firefight or spartan ops highlighting MC/Blue Team/Arbiter/MSG. Johnson/Noble 6 in their battles that didn’t make it into the previous games. They could produce games like that until they’ve exhausted every single noteworthy player’s story and I’d continue buying. Especially if they bring back firefight. Although they should be given clever names like Halo: Battle for Harvest (featuring Johnson hopefully), and not Halo 28, which would be really annoying.

That’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for. Hell, bring it back to Reach (again) and actually play as John growing up in the Spartan environment. Bring in Chief Mendez, we hardly know anything about him. Halo can go as far as it wants, there is so much to lore to pull from!
