So I want build a map and was wondering whats needed to make it functional and beautiful. Could yall give me pointers?
Functional and beautiful can go hand in hand cosmetic-wise, or functionality can be based on physical interaction and realism.
A good base point to start, is ensuring you have a theme to boot. Do you want the map looking a certain way and having a certain atmosphere? Then plan that out.
Do you have a certain design element for the flow of battle? Is it meant for 4v4? 8v8? Is it better suited for symmetry, or asymmetrical layouts? I find a lot more of the maps play better with asymmetry involved, but for newcomers, having a symmetrical design may be easier. Nothing looks better than a map that is built correctly initially.
Once you do that and get the base functions, you can start adding elements to your map that are just for cosmetic aesthetics. Your lighting, extra little tidbits and designs on the walls and floors. Everything that adds detail adds to the realism and makes a map more enjoyable, so long as you don’t overdo it and crowd the play space with junk, or extremely high contrast things that stick out like a sore thumb against the rest of the map.
Make sure the size and flow is right. Make sure it’s not too open or too crowded. Try adding multiple entrances to rooms to prevent a cramped feeling. Also be sure to check out all the props, there’s a ton of them, but the right props can make your map look so much better.
Thank you guys this helps out a lot.
Good map flow. good design with a weapon and vehicle placement. geared and adjusted with a specific game mode in mind.
A good map in my opinion is composed of a simple design, but that allows several approaches and styles of play. In addition you have to decide whether to make it specular or asymmetric, if you implement the vehicles (which in my opinion would make the thing more complicated for a novice) and above all concentrate on making your map balanced and without any point of domination.
