What’s a good free video editor to use for machinima?

Windows movie maker.
Windows Movie Maker (the Vista version). Windows Live Movie Maker is just awful… unfortunately, Windows 7 is only compatible with that garbage and a stripped-down version of Windows Movie Maker 2.6, which though useful, is severely limited.
But for free what are you going to do.
Yep. Back in the day I just survived with Movie Maker. Unfortunately, you’ll need to fork up the cash to have good tools to use.
Thus is why Im waiting for Halo 4. Ive wanted to make a series for years(since I first saw RvB) and in this next year I should finally have the money for an HD capture card and some Premier Pro!

How about you grow up the courage to ask your mommy for some money?
Otherwise your going to have to live with poor quality budget software.
This may not be the answer you were looking for but I’ll throw in my 2 cents.
Sony Vegas is very powerful and surprisingly easy to learn how to use. There are several versions of the editing package. The best package suited to your needs is probably the $45 version geared to basic editing. It is vastly more powerful than whatever free video editor you can find as well as any of the MS video editing tools packaged with any version of Windows. Vegas runs on XP, Vista or 7.
You can go to Sony’s site. sonycreativesoftware and download any of their trial versions for free.
The one I am suggesting allows you to have 10 video tracks. It has over 500 video fx and transitions. The transitions and fx are rendered in real time so you can see what they will look like before you do an actual render.
Depending on what video card you have, you can do all of your editing on the PC monitor and view the video on an external video monitor (ie, a TV) so you can see how the project will look after it is rendered before you actually render it. It’s a huge time saver. This is actually a very important feature because when you render video using any editing package, the video comes out a little different than it looked when you were editing it.
There are too many features to list here. I really recommend downloading the free trial from Sony’s site. If you do wind up getting Vegas and need help you can contact me any time. I have been using the pro versions of Vegas professionally for 10 years now. Hmm, another nice thing about Vegas, there are hundreds of user submitted tutorials for it on YouTube.
Anyway, give it a try. It’s free! Good luck.
For the love of god do not use WMM, just dish out 50 bucks for a cheap version of Sony Vegas.
Windows Movie Maker and iMovie are the only ones I can think of on the top of my head.
If you want to pull of some special effects that the software can’t attain then you might have to look towards making a purchase somewhere.
