What would you have done differently?

“Ah jeez another one of these posts.” Like many people I’m appalled and disappointed with how the monetization was handled in this game. I knew this was going to be a major issue from the first flight in which I referred to the monetization of the game as a certain illness, that apparently is a no-no word in the forums, that would infect and damage the surrounding game. But I’m not surprised because I played Halo 5, Gears 4, Gears 5, and I saw the direction they were heading in the first flight. I could go into detail but we all know. So I thought to myself, what would I do with the system the way it is right now to fix it and actually make it pro-consumer and more fun? And here’s what I came up with.

  1. The score system is already in the game, I’m guessing remnant of the XP system we were originally supposed to have. Bring back a real progression system and just use players scores to level it up. I really don’t feel like its as difficult as they say it is when the entire groundwork is already there. Unless the battle pass is literally just duct taped over top of the original one.

  2. XP Boosts and Challenge Swaps are not real rewards. For a game that was supposed to have the most customization ever there is an astonishing lack of it. It really supports the idea that the battlepass/fortnite store were decisions made in the 11th our and the game was not originally designed to support them so we have this massive content drought and XP boosts and Challenge swaps are being used as filler. We need to DBZ Kai this and cut the filler. If you’re going to sell me a premium battle pass on the premise of customization then every single tier I better be getting a weapon skin, a player coating, or armor unlocks. You can throw in the boosts to fluff the real rewards but you have got to stop pretending like these things themselves are rewards. Literally no one would have been upset if this game launched without a battle pass if you needed more time to flesh these things out.

  3. Basic color customization. The three color system should not have been removed from the game. At minimum players should have been able to continue to use the colors they’ve used for 20 years without being impeded in any way. Premium coatings could still have been available as rewards, battlepass items, and store items. Allowing players to have 3 standard mat colors to use from the start would not have affected the sale of premium coatings in any way because premium coatings could still have been a lot cooler by design and players would have been more likely to buy a premium coating from the store without feeling forced to do it. Premium coatings should also unlock that coating not only your spartan but for all of your weapons as well.

  4. Armor customization. No halo player who isn’t playing Halo 2 in 2004 should be able to play a new Halo game for 15 hours and not unlock any kind of customization. You needed to grab players attention quickly and give them options without forcing them to feel like they needed to spend money in the store or grind 300 hours of a battle pass to get some kind of individuality. Imagine if each multiplayer achievement had armor pieces tied to them and you got an entire basic amount of customization just from your initial playthrough of the multiplayer or the academy. That’s player first.

  5. Emblems, armor, and I feel stretched like butter that has been scraped over too much bread Gandalf. The same emblem or armor piece should not have to be unlocked multiple times. That’s not a reward. If you unlock the emblem you should have that emblem for everything across the board. If you unlock a shoulder then you should unlock both. Like XP Boosts and Challenge swaps STOP with the artificial filler crap. Emblems should also be customizable and have the same 3 standard mat color options that I said the Spartans should have. There aren’t even any premium color variations for emblems right now, we get some presets that are awful and that’s it. Remove the restrictions.

  6. Visors and premium coatings should not be locked to armor cores. They should be universal. I think locking anything to a specific core is the wrong move because we’ve already seen this type of system work flawlessly in MCC. But Visors and Coatings specifically should absolutely be universal.

I’m sure there are more I could think of but after typing all of that my mind is blank. So what do you guys think? If you could wave your wand and make changes to the system as it stands right now what would you change?

Not forced Crossplay would of be my main thing to do differently.

Crossplay has always been a non-issue for me personally. But I think they got it right where it mattered most by allowing input based MM in ranked. Being super concerned with input based matchmaking in social modes is silly to me. I think the real issue with social game modes is the SBMM. Once you’re above a certain skill range there are no longer social modes in the game and that’s something that needs to change. There should be modes where people can go just to have fun and higher skill players don’t have that right now.

Customization: Give back basic colors pull a Warframe and sell premium colors with their own fancy shading, texturing. Everyone happy.
Armor Cores are fine if they intend to make VASTLY different looking armors that cause art style conflicts and clipping but don’t make it so pointlessly similar like it is now with mark 7 and V(B).
Battle Pass give way more actual stuff on the thing holy hell why are you banished to the basic helmet for the mark 7 core until the butt end of the free pass.
Daily bundles should be daily sales, offer the other armors at a fair price but daily discounts cut it down even harder.
Emblems revert to the old way I hate this current system.
Do bring in MCC nameplates and replace a bunch of those xp boosters and swaps with these, though those are nice.

How I would have made Infinite:

  • First off Scrap free to play, but offer a 1 year beta, so players KNOW what they are paying for.

  • Next is the absolute removal of microtransactions outside of 10$ per battlepass season meaning ZERO paid cosmetics, as Halo SHOULD be.

  • After that I’d ensure the game launched not only insanely polished, BUT ensure that Forge, Co-Op, AND Custom games were not only around at launch, but fully functional, even if it meant delaying the game 1 more year.

  • Once all of that was done I’d work on making the Fracture events permanent “split timeline” like events you can go back and do at any time once they go live, so NOBODY gets left behind
