What would be your first Reaction if.....

Karen Travis was signed on to pen the story for Halo 4 and on? What would you think? Feel? Discuss.

Glasslands was a good book, I enjoyed it a lot. People seriously need to stop hating on it.

It would be:

“Yay!”

I’m unsure. I liked my first readthrough of Glasslands, but as I’ve looked back, her treatment of moral and ethical dilemmas was pretty one-sided. (I agreed with what she was writing, but that’s beside the point.) Halo should be emotionally and ethically complex, and I felt that Glasslands was not very complex in those areas. So, an okay writer, but not for the game.

It wouldn’t phase me one bit if she wrote some lines, or most of the story, her book wasn’t half bad. Tho people don’t agree with the way she writes, and they believe that she can twist and turn the story in ways the wouldn’t go with the other stories in the series/universe, which may or may not be true, but what I do know, is that 343i most likely has her on a short leash when it comes to Halo related work.

Yes the handling of Halsey’s character isn’t something popular on this site. That and Sanghelli (i hope i slept that right)-Human post war relations.

Indeed, life usually isn’t shades of black or white but grey. I can see why being one sided would be considered simple and narrow minded. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for the games, Halo in game stories aren’t terribly complex or Pulitzer prize worthy. Sure they have sad moments but most of the good stuff is fleshed out in terminals and books. My hope is that Halo 4 and on to be on par with the story telling in the books.

If that’s the case, her input in the actual story would be minimal, if almost non existent and she just handles the post war era and not the reclaimer trilogy. I would like to know who’s actually writing up the story to new trilogy. It can’t just be Frankie by himself :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked Glasslands, I honestly don’t really understand the hate on it.

Whilst seated at a desk, I would rotate the various joints in my body so as to move my head along a ninety-degree arc, bringing it parallel to and in contact with the surface of the furniture item. I would then partially reverse this motion and move my right hand – inevitably resting on my mouse as I read this information from a computer screen – inward toward my body, and then slightly upward, such that the various features of the front of my skull would be resting in the inside of my appendage.

Or, in more succinct terms, I’d headdesk and facepalm.

I love her writing the book, but I don’t think she’s cut out for the Halo 4 story.

While I absolutely loved Glasslands, I don’t know if I’d want to see Karen write Halo 4 or any of the games in the trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, she’s very good at writing stories and I’m sure she could make a good story but the Reclaimer trilogy should stay in the hands of the true Halo fans (in other words, 343 Industries, not some kids on here coming up with dumb ideas like Johnson coming back or Telcam leading a new Covenant).

It was probably because we’ve seen the other side of the argument for 10 years; we know the reasons, there’s no need to return to it.

OT: I’d be pretty happy. She practically invented the Gears of War characters and did great with them. Since Halo 4 is more character centric, she could potentially be an organizer for development, with Eric Nylund acting as plot developer (he worked as one of the lead writers on Gears 3, so he does do games).

Eric Nylund please. He has the core and classic feel of Halo down pat. Plus he knows how to better portray Chief’s persona more than any other writer.

The only Nylund book I’ve read is Ghosts of Onyx, and while I thought it was a good book, nothing in it really blew me away. Are TFoR and FS worth the read (i.e. better than GoO)?

Umm, yes, they are excellent reads and for sure worth it. You would have probably enjoyed Ghosts of Onyx much more had you read them first too since you would have known what was going on and who all those characters were. Ghosts of Onyx was after all a sequel to The Fall of Reach and First Strike.

The Fall of Reach = Awesome read. Definitely worth getting.

The Flood = Good, however it can get a tad monotonous but still worth the read because of the backstory with the rest of the UNSC on the ring world and how they manage to fight off flood and covenant alike; for a while at least.

First Strike = Awesome, Chief and his team kick -Yoink-. The covenant get their butts handed to them when the majority of their attack force get decimated before they can go on to Earth.

There are a few spelling mistakes and such in these books though, although maybe they’ve been taken out by now with new prints

WHAAAT!? Ghosts of Onyx is the best Halo book I’ve read so far (havent fully read Glasslands yet). Nylund went crazy with that book.

OT, I liked Gears 3’s story (Karen wrote it) and from what I’ve read so far in Glasslands, Karen knows how to do multiple stories and make Yoink! just crazy. Sooo much going on after Halo 3 and she’s done a good job on doing that (180 pages in out of 450). as far as doing the actual trilogy, I dunno. I’d prefer Nylund. He just does such an amazing job. Karen made 1 book and Nylund’s done 4/5 (?). Nylund has more experience in both the Halo universe and John himself. Karen joined 10 years later into Halo.

I’d prefer Nylund over Karen any day, but I’d rather prefer 343i doing it, and Nylund helping in a touch here and there. IMO

I found Glasslands to be a very good book even though I had heard a lot of bad talk about it before I got it. But I’d rather have someone with more experience with the Halo universe to write the story of Halo 4.

Judging from Gears 3? She writes game storylines far, far too simplistically in every sense.

You have won the internet.

OT: I don’t know, the way she writes is a bit simplistic(when it comes to writing games). The way she handled the characters in Gears of War is brilliant however, so she’s good at doing characters.

Story wise, like I said she can a bit simplistic when it comes to games.

Who?
