Ok, the title of this thread is not meant to be sarcastic. And I realise getting rid of infinity would be top of your list. But what do you really want in a playlist that will meet your standards. I see a lot of posts on this forum from traditional players that seem to contradict each other. If players can’t agree on a common ground, then you can’t expect 343 to meet your standards.
At let me make it plain, I am not biased, I enjoy infinity, and traditional settings. I only defend the infinity fans right to have a playlist they enjoy.
If you’re talking about what people wanted for a classic style playlist, the formula has existed in the forums for over a year.
This is basically what it is:
No loadout options. Equal starts.
Every player starts with the same primary weapon and the same secondary weapon (BR or DMR, and UNSC pistol).
Grenade pickups.
No instant respawn.
No personal or random ordnance.
No armor abilities or class mods.
No sprint.
Weapons are pickups on map and all weapons have a 40 second despawn time, as opposed to 12 seconds.
Match scoring in single digits (1 point for kills, -1 point for suicides).
In-game ranking system based on wins and losses.
I think that’s it, but someone will likely add to it if I left something out.
Having said this, 343i has attempted to create classic style playlists before, but have consistently been unwilling to give up on many of their “new features” in the creation of these playlists. Some playlists had random ordnance; some had personal ordnance; all had sprint and 12 second despawning weapons, and the list goes on. They just change a few settings in their infinity formula and then offer it as “classic.” Add to this the fact that they didn’t start working on classic settings until after 75% of the population had left, with many feeling dissatisfied with the apparent lack of progress being made by 343i (it took more than 6 months for 343i to release the weapon tuning update). Throughout it all, 343i has only offered excuses for why they can’t or won’t change one or more settings.
Is it any wonder that every “classic playlist” 343i tries fails miserably?
> Is it any wonder that every “classic playlist” 343i tries fails miserably?
The main reason that all of 343i’s classic playlist attempts have failed has nothing to do with the fact that it kept a few modern features, but rather that the competitive community that would have preferred that playstyle had already left the game ages before.
Without a healthy population to support such playlists, having them in higher numbers is rather redundant. When continuing support for Halo 4, 343i is going to cater to the people that consistently play the game, not people who complain about it on a forum.

As I said, around 75% of the population left before 343i began working on classic playlists. It has definitely been a factor. However, I do feel that 343i engineered these playlists to fail by leaving out just enough of Halo’s core arena mechanics so as to make them unappealing to old and new players. For me personally, I enjoy classic settings, but also liked some aspects of the Infinity settings as well, yet there was not one classic playlist that I felt I could enjoy. There was always something “off” about them.

All of this except removing sprint is fine with me,
From a big Halo 4 fan
If I was to choose, there is only one playlist I truly miss. Lone Wolves was my favorite playlist in Halo 3, and was what got me to my max rank. Although, if 343i was to include this playlist, I’d probably enjoy it more with sprinting off for a more classic playlist, but they clearly won’t be taking sprinting out for one playlist.

If this was in halo 5 as well as a social and competitive playlist separation, I don’t think I would see the sun very often
Base it around Reach’s Anniversary Playlist settings. That playlist was truly an addiction for me.

Tin foil hat much?

@OP- Depends on what you want to call “traditional Halo” I guess.

Ooh yes. Good days. Anniversary BTB on Ridgeline and Headlong.
Never understood why they removed Anniversary BTB and kept Anniversary Showdown, which wasn’t fun at all.
From my whole reach career, i had the most fun playing Anniversary BTB.

Well from reading the posts of some of the regulars on this forum, I get the impression that traditional halo is br/magnum starts, no sprint or any other extras.
But it seems to be hard to define, as there doesn’t seem to be any common ground in what the old school halo fans do want.
I regard big team slayer, as opposed to big team infinity slayer as traditional, at least by h4 standards. Then again, maybe I am easily pleased. That is what this thread is all about, to work out what the infinity haters do want in a playlist.

Um, no.
It is true that fans of traditional Halo have stated a willingness to compromise on some features, but this is an altogether different thing than having no common ground. Most are in agreement on what old-school Halo settings need to be. I challenge you to find me one proponent of the traditional Halo settings who disagrees with the majority of what I listed above.

Well for a start, sprint seems to be one thing that I have seen varying opinions about, yes, just one thing, but a significant one. As for your challenge, well I have better things to do then to spends hours poring through 1000s of pages of forum pages. I come online to play h4, my forum posts are brief and to the point.
I also lack the writing skills to make long winded forum post, quoting stats and other technical jargon. There are people on this forum that have made that an art form, so best I leave that to them.
I judge things by what I see with my own eyes. Over the life of h4, 343 has made various attempts to create playlists to make the traditional fans happy, all have failed. Be it pro, throwdown, legendary, proving ground, the traditional players have not supported these playlists in numbers etc. However on here they do seem to come together to bash infinity, and to label infinity fans as casual, noobs, throw of the dice players etc. Meanwhile they sit back in their ivory towers and show what true halo fans they are by no longer playing halo.
I didn’t start this thread to have an argument with you, or anyone else. I just thought that maybe once and for all the old school players could unite and let 343 know for sure what they do want.

Pretty much this.
I would be willing to compromise so far as giving players the choice of primary weapons within the same niche (e.g. BR and Carbine). Beyond that, it’s only a matter of how much brokenness I can deal with.

I have not seen sprint as a polarizing issue when it comes to traditional settings. most agree that it doesn’t belong.
Secondly, you did assert that there is no common ground for what people want in traditional Halo settings. I submit to you that there is, and I offered details on what that common ground is.
> I judge things by what I see with my own eyes. Over the life of h4, 343 has made various attempts to create playlists to make the traditional fans happy, all have failed. Be it pro, throwdown, legendary, proving ground, the traditional players have not supported these playlists in numbers etc.
As I stated before, most of the people who wanted the classic arena style gameplay left long before 343i even started talking about it. Also, 343i could not bring themselves (for whatever reason) to forego many their Infinity features in the creation of these playlists. Examples: sprint, weapon despawn, loadouts, ordnance.
I’m not saying that these kinds of features need to go away (there’s certainly room in Halo for Infinity), but when it comes to old-school Halo, there are certain things that just don’t belong.
> However on here they do seem to come together to bash infinity, and to label infinity fans as casual, noobs, throw of the dice players etc. Meanwhile they sit back in their ivory towers and show what true halo fans they are by no longer playing halo.
A good majority of these people still support Halo by: 1) coming to the forums to express their views, thoughts, and ideas; and 2) continuing to play Halo games. We don’t all play Halo 4, but many people still play Halo 3 and Halo Reach. You can characterize us however you wish, but I for one don’t look down my nose at fans of Infinity. My tower window is far too high up to even see them. (jk)
> I didn’t start this thread to have an argument with you, or anyone else. I just thought that maybe once and for all the old school players could unite and let 343 know for sure what they do want.
I gave you the list. It has been detailed in these forums since Halo 4 was released. While I don’t know if it covers everything, I’m confident that most old-school Halo fans would find “common ground” in it.
Firstly, thank you for your contribution to this thread, and to anyone else who has contributed.
At the risk of sounding corny, I would like to say this…
A handful of posters will raise barely a whimper, and we need a roar. Unless all the old school halo fans have left the planet, which I doubt. Well it only takes a few minutes to sign onto waypoint, and offer your support for a true traditional playlist. 343 need to be reminded that halo is a very special game, a game that halo fans have supported for years.
We have supported halo 343, now reward that support by giving halo fans what they have been asking for. There is room for infinity and traditional. Regardless of which game type you support, I like to think that we are all halo fans, we just differ slightly in our game preferences.
I know I would be quite happy to play either game type.

Thank you for posting it again, I only read it in an earlier version and didn’t know it has been completed since then.

This looks to me like more of a roar than a whimper. The fact that this thread you created hasn’t received much attention doesn’t mean these hopes have not been spoken about already.
343 knows what traditional fans want. I think, these forums, just like in Halo 4, those traditional fans are few and far between. I remember back in the pre Halo 4 days you couldn’t keep up with all the topics on these forums.
Anyway, I think Musashi gave a pretty good list. I didn’t see anything to add or take away from it. Even like Vektor0 said maybe compromise on the starting weapons but only if they all have equal functions.
