What will probably happen...

As optimistic as I try to be, I can’t help the feeling that Halo 5 will be the last coffin nail for the expansive, creative and vibrant community that is left from Halos passed.

I feel like 343 will tell us that they’ve finally got us as a community dialed in and they’ve learned from Halo 4 and we’ll start to feel optimistic about Halo 5. And then when they announce Halo One (or whatever) details they’ll announce that it has fully fleshed out classes and aim down sights and the community will lose it.

And then when the game releases it will sell okay but not nearly as well as previous Halos and somewhere down the line some Microsoft exec will say “Halo just doesn’t sell anymore. People don’t care about it like they used to.”. To which we will, of course, respond, words muffled by our palms pressed firmly against our faces, “You killed it! It’s your fault it doesn’t sell anymore! You made it not Halo!”.

100% real talk right here.

Halo 5 is it, the last chance for this community. If it’s sub par like the last two iterations, I guess it’s strike three you’re out.

What part of the community? Because I know a crap ton of people who love the story and think 343 made the best story, so no, it isn’t the last chance for Halo

Sure, but they are definitely a smaller portion of the community. I thought 343 nailed the campaign, but the campaign isn’t (for most people) what keeps the community playing a game years after release. That would be matchmaking, forge, custom games, etc. If the next game gets even more CoD-ish I’ll purposefully buy it used or rent it for the campaign.

It’s somewhat funny to see people already expecting this to be the “Golden Egg” of the Reclaimer Saga when we haven’t seen anything more than a teaser. I’m waiting to see what 343i puts together, but I will admit, I’m expecting something fancy.

It could be 343’s Empire Strikes Back

Its good but we dont know if its going to better than halo 5 then on top of that it doesn’t have the genre restrictions that halo does so it has more free will, thus making certain things possible.

I think 343 is going to make the same mistake.

What is that mistake? Well, they looked at COD’s popularity and said, “We need to be like them.” Hence your PODs, perks and loadouts. I bet they’re looking at BO2 and seeing how stacked perks would work lol.

Best bet is to lower expectations. I dont expect Halo 5 to be an arena shooter at its core. Halo 5 will be more like COD and BF with more perks and weaponry to unlock. Personally I dont think 343 knows what made Halo tick so they’ll make a game with a bunch of nonsense and slap Halo on the box. And guess what? I’ll probably still buy it because I loved what Halo used to be so I’ll try to squeeze some enjoyment from it. However I think 343 did a good job with H4’s campaign and I’m interested in where they take it.

Here’s to TitanFall and Destiny.

The story is the most important part of Halo. And based on how 343i did with Halo 4, I’m damn well confident that Halo 5 will have a great story.

This isn’t a last chance for anyone, it’s a new beginning.

I very doubt that he/she is referring to the story alone, seeing as Halo is made up of so much more than the Campaign.

I love Halo 4’s Campaign, but Halo 5 can’t just rely on a good Campaign to make up for a terrible multiplayer.

That’s entirely subjective. In the height of the Halo 2 and 3 days do you really think it was the campaign that had so many people playing? No. It was part of it, especially for core Halo fans like you and me. Maybe even a decent sized part. But what gives a game life beyond a few months is the multiplayer. And multiplayer is a huge part of Halo’s legacy. A part which was destroyed for Halo 4.

Agreed. And my original point with this thread was to say that I think Microsoft will continue to change it for the worse and then think no one likes Halo anymore when people refuse to buy their butchered version of it.

The majority of the Halo fan base, could careless how well the campaign plays. You don’t even have to take a poll on this, it’s that’s clear. Myself nor any of my local gamer buddies keep playing Halo because of campaign, and we also don’t buy Halo for campaign.

Halo as a majority is purchased for ONLINE Match Making games. The last two Halo games I haven’t played beyond the first level or two and that was only because I was playing ONLINE with a buddy that wanted to play it. Buy new Halo, load up Match Making and game <this is clearly what the majority will do when Halo 5 launches. mMM will be what breaks the camels back for the last time, and it’s already cracked down the spine.

I’ll admit that I think the next major Halo installment is 343i’s chance to show that they have learned from what didn’t work with Halo 4. In no way am I speaking for the entire community when I say this, but Halo 4 felt like it didn’t deliver on some aspects - and now 343i has had some time to see what worked and what didn’t work, the next major release will be a tipping point.

But, I can’t help but feel like it will tip in the good direction; that 343i has learned a great deal from their mistakes and that they will use this knowledge to make the next Halo installment the best it can possibly be. They have a lot of good minds at work for them, and with the possibilities a new console generation will bring, I remain optimistic for Halo’s future.

Except that the main reason The Empire Strikes Back was so good was because it had a different director (Irvin Kirshner).

This comment was removed since my friend somehow guessed my password, sorry for any trouble, at least he’s smart enough not to do anything drastic. I already changed my password.

> Don’t get too ahead of yourself with COD features, destructible terrain is actually pretty good, and smart moving would be okay, but aim down sights, really, in real life that wouldn’t change a thing, you would still be as inaccurate as before, I don’t think 343 will give up that nice hip-shooter feeling, there are things Halo could benefit from implementing, but not all of them are necessary, but actually, any true fan of Halo would stay, and the new ones from Reach and 4 will give it the population boost Halo Xbox One needs to earn back our title as the true king of FPS. Besides those guys who use aim down sights aren’t that good, technically if you had that good of a view with that sight, when you fire, it would be hurting your face as it keeps hitting you, that is one thing that makes the other shooters mechanics flawed you have to lower your standards, but not that low.

Uhhhh…you haven’t been around long have you? Halo Reach and 4 are what made Halo no longer the king of FPS’. They pretty much killed the matchmaking community. Halo 4 had less people playing it a couple months after release than Halo 3 did after 2 years. Seriously. Google it. You can find old forum threads from 2009 Bnet where people were worried that everyone was leaving Halo 3 because only 150,000 people were online in a given day. Halo 4 maxes at about 25,000.

I took it as a whole when he refered to the community is giving 343 one last chance

You mean the Borderlands clone?
