Generally, most Halo games will retain a portion of the Halo community after the newest release. Some will continue to play Halo 5 due to not liking the direction Halo is going and wait for reviews on the newest game before buying the new one. One thing for certain is updates for this game is basically done (yes I am aware of the new skins). It is extremely unlikely that when Halo 6 is out that this game will receive any more attention in the form of updates. Maybe playlist rotations if anything. There will be a large drop in the player base and maybe even result in Halo 5 becoming a ghost town seeing that search times for certain playlists are already long. I imagine this game will be largely forgotten by the time 5 comes out with very few people still actually playing it.
Infinite will kill Halo 5 for the most part. Hopefully it’s a better game because I still enjoy Halo 5 and would hate to see the player population plummet
There are always stragglers. Some are financial and some just love the version so much they never leave. I was stunned when I was summoned online to play COD2 and I laughed and then said “seriously” Sure enough we match a squad that seemingly never left the game a decade later. For me personally my 2 favorite Halo MP’s so far are Halo 2 and Halo 5. But there is something I have really liked about all Halo installments. But I always move on. Occasionally we will have throwback LAN nights with a version or two back. Let’s hope Halo Infinite keeps its promise on the Split Screen. We felt super odd launching Halo 5 Launch LAN party with Halo 4 and Halo Reach games. We couldn’t afford 16 games, 16 TV’s/Monitors, 16 Live Golds, and 16 Consoles. We finally had a 10 person Halo 5 night 4 months after launch.
Halo CE - 10 Person LAN Party launch
Halo 2 - 22 person launch with 6 bros on the bench rotating in.
Halo 3 - 18 person launch party with 2 friends on the bench rotating in.
Halo Reach - 16 person launch party
Halo 4 - 14 person launch party
Halo 5 - 16 people…but we were forced to play H4 and Reach.

Everyone will just switch to the next up coming Halo, just like every other launch.
If Infinite is only for the X I can see a decent playerbase staying on H5, but if it is also available for the OG then H5 will be a ghost town due to the low cost to upgrade.

- No new updates, as the game runs properly (generally) and doesn’t need it, like MCC did (does) - Depends on the MP of Inifinite and how it measures up. Initially, yes there will be a drop in H5 player base, as most people will want to try out the new game. But Halo 5 MP is pretty decent and I expect it to hold it’s own. - Nothing really. I mean Infinite having split screen will certainly make a difference for pulling people away. But isn’t that what most people want - The most recent Halo game to have as much success as possible? I’m excited for the chance that Halo could redevelop it’s glory.
There are still people still playing Reach and I think H4 so I imagine people will still play H5 as well. The population will likely be a lot smaller and I doubt there will be updates. We’re barely getting updates with H5 now so I expect that to only get worse once Infinite comes out.

Halo: Infinite will not be for the X only, Its coming to all Xbox One Consoles.
