As the slow realisation set in that the lack of a good connection search option has taken PvP Halo off the menu for Australians, my little group of mates looked to Spartan Ops to have an excuse to pop the game in at least once a week.
At first we were willing to put up with the crippling lag because the story was at least fun but our patience has worn out and this week none of us bothered with the mode.
So what went wrong with Spartan Ops?
Why is it SO laggy? Why do I feel like I’m walking on ice? Why do grenades take forever to appear? Why is the input lag so horrendous?
Before you say it’s our connection we’ve been playing Borderlands 2 and it’s crisp and tight, and we get the same with horde mode in Gears of War.
So why is the biggest game from Microsoft unable to provide what other games seem to?
I doubt there’s a fix planned but I’m just curious.
> Dude…this happens in matchmaking too, not just in Spartan Ops. It’s called no Region Filter
We play spartan ops with the same group of people as we do BL2 and GOW. For some reason Spartan Ops is far worse than any of those, an it’s worse than math making in H4

Yah you haven’t played any Halo co-op mode over live before have you. Well prepare to be amazed but compared to Reach, ODST, and Halo 3 what we have now is actually pretty -Yoink!- good. Other games certainly don’t have the same problems with bots and online play but as part of Bungie’s legacy Halo does. 343 wasn’t able to get the code up to par completely but take it from someone who has a LOT of experience with the co-op side of Halo they’ve made some pretty significant improvements over the last few games. Maybe with Halo 5 they’ll even be able to accommodate you with a region filter (though that’s not a cure all. Distance isn’t always directly relatable to connection quality.) but for now just take it as is. And if you can’t play it because of your own particular situation stick to those other games.
Unlike standard Multiplayer matches, which use an asynchronous netcode, Spartan Ops uses a synchronous netcode. This means that all data transmissions (button presses, et cetera) from all consoles have to be verified before the game can proceed. This results in more severe input delay as well as a “weakest link” effect, where everyone lags as bad as the laggiest player present.
Unfortunately, this is necessary because a synchronous netcode is the only way to prevent networking errors and keep Halo’s AI system working properly.

I have played each previous campaign to death and I have all the other achievements. My halo 3 4 ghosts on legendary achievement was done when I was in the states and my mates were back home Downunder. I know the previous games have had poor online co-op issues. I’m well aware. Older ges had this issue, even Borderlands 1.
I just wanna know why? Especially since other games have gotten it working now. It’s so ugly and there’s games outperforming Microsoft’s baby that supposedly had years of development and a ridiculous budget. I just wanna know how something so bad from previous games wasn’t overhauled and repaird

uhuh but what about if say 343 makes like a big patch thing to lessen the effect?
Played my fair share of co-op in Campaign and SOPS and with friends on mm. Never experienced lags other then when ppl drop and a new server is choosen. I say it’s your connection.

So my connection amd the connection of my friends suddenly gets better the nights when we play Borderlands 2 or Gears of War? And it gets worse only n the nights when we play SpOps?
