All i need to say is, someone else should check the data. Even get new data. Halo 5 is a different game. Even in medicine, which is much more important than gaming, you don’t have “proof” with a single study. You need many.
I know he said he analyzed millions of matches, but i don’t buy it. Some things he said can be true, but not all. I find evidence to the contrary everyday. Anecdotal evidence yes, i know. But you can’t say " sbmm is the solution to everything matchmaking realated" when a significant portion of the playerbase is complaining, at least i can say that this particular implementation of sbmm is deeply flawed
But it’s true. No need to see where it’s going. Only the ones who were having difficulty with the old matchmaking system wanted sbmm. It’s natural. I’m not saying bad players should get spawntrapped until they quit the game. But i bet the other half of the player base didn’t want it
It’s not like 343 has ever mislead us about anything.
Of course Menke is going to say that the data supports his ideas. Otherwise he would have been out of a job. If you’re good with statistics, you can make data say pretty much anything you want. Lies, damn lies, and statistics. But that’s like the inmates running the prison.
Nah, I disagree. No point playing games with people who don’t have a chance against you. Personal preference I suppose, but even in casual, I don’t find stomping people to be very entertaining. Better to be at least somewhat competitive.
You’re talking like every match without sbmm is lopsided. The truth is, most of matches in games with light sbmm are still balanced, because most players are average by definition
Unfortunately, that doesn’t do much for me since those games came out like ten years ago. I don’t really recall how they did matchmaking, can you clarify?
That’s what ranked used to be for. This argument for social doesn’t make sense. 343 created a problem out of nowhere by removing non-HCS playlists from ranked. Old Halo’s had ranked playlists with the same rules as social.
Great players could then match with only other great players in ranked. And then they also know where they stand competitively. Current social is just ranked without the game giving you feedback about where you actually stand. That’s why I can’t help but assume that those who argue that they just want competitive games only in social are arguing in bad faith.
And then low ranked players mostly only match with other low ranks, while leaving social for playing in parties, or getting fun challenges, or for people who are just laying back in their seat playing with music or something.
Simple it was relaxed where you get a variety of matches in matches ie you could have a inheritor(using reach for a example here)be in a infection or team snipers with you and they could still lose due to them not having to sweat and get time to relax in a casual match
Also we had the ability to prioritize connection first so we wouldn’t be forced into laggy matches or servers we have no reason being in
Of course there was the occasional stomp/stomped match but that happened a very few times and was actually fun due to variety
Inheritor is just XP (e.g., time played, more or less), not skill, correct? Do you know if they actually did any limiting or matchmaking based on skill?
Prioritizing connection sounds like a nice option for sure.
Thats also why i listed halo 3 as they had a separate type of xp called skill and you could only increase it via winning matches in the ranked playlist and losses against players of a lower skill decreases it with it being the only way to reach certain ranks as certain ranks require a certain skill level and a certain amount of normal xp and to use halo 3 as a example you could be against someone who could be 20 skill levels higher than you and still win because they could chill and listen to music without having to worry that much also we could talk to eachother in the lobbies and game via proximity chat and you know socialize in social games
Although it did come at a cost of of increased search times for higher skill levels once the playerbase started dropping off
Like we had a place to go for variety and a place to go for when we want to take the games seriously
And again we had the option to prioritize connection quality
This is exactly it. In light/no SBMM situations, by definition the majority of players will be average. In a truly random matchmade game, the odds of one team being all highly skilled players while the other is composed of all low skilled players obviously exists. But I have a very hard time thinking a truly random matchmaking experience would produce as many lopsided snowball matches as we see in Infinite today.
Heck its ironic that you get more lopsided games with strict sbmm you know the one thing that should be preventing them
Like no joke i used to have to tank my mmr in modern warfare due to how strict it was like if you had one good game with a 2.4 kd congrats i hope you like getting stomped for 10+ matches because we found you at a pro level meanwhile we will ignore a chunk of your losses because of our screw up
Like i find it stupid how excited strict sbmm is to put you into unfair matches but takes it’s sweet -Yoink!- time to calculate your losses and put you into a fair match after a win or two
This is a business, and a business wants as many players as possible, that means making everyone who gets the game to not feel like they’re being destroyed constantly.
By doing this, the ‘broader audience’ will like the game more, leaving Halo vets to deal with what is left.
Losing you is nothing compared to what they are gaining from the casual audience, why do you think mobile games are so much more lucrative?
AAA games try to make as much money as possible, any heart and soul devs put into the game is squashed by profit making decisions of the higher-ups.
Welcome to modern gaming, and don’t forget to log on for the event before you miss out on it forever, sucker.
EDIT: I’m personally fine with SBMM because I like to sweat and have even matches, that’s what’s fun for me. Thought I should add my personal opinion to this.
And funny enough, COD has had looser SBMM in the titles following MW19. I forgot which exactly (I think it was led by Xclusive Ace) but some Youtubers got together to analyze the matchmaking systems, and they loosened it in Cold War by a little, and then from Cold War loosened it even more by a good margin for Vanguard.
Multiple people in this thread are arguing that it is good for player retention, but if so, why is Activision backing off a bit? Not to mention that Infinite clearly hasn’t retained players well lmao.
In MW, I realized I had to stop playing when I noticed that getting a Chopper Gunner didn’t even make me feel good because I knew it would just ruin the rest of my games for the night.
Why should people play Infinite if they can’t be excited if they randomly get a high streak?
Seems to me the ones who don’t want sbmm want to be able to curb stomp less skilled players from time to time. SBMM is needed to help keep matches fair, or at least attempt at keeping it fair. Close competitive games are more fun and more likely to retain players versus games that are just curb stomps.
We all went through that process. But forcing me to on a alt account to play casually when I want to work on main is not cool it’s annoying. Plus I don’t want to try every single game just to win can I not play casually ?
