What was the usual way to play Halo Wars? 1v1; 2v2; 3v3? In Halo FPS I tend to think of 4v4 as like a standard game with 2v2 and 8v8 as variants so to speak. If there would have been a Halo Wars championship or if there were Gamebattles tournaments or anything, what did people play?
Was there a ranking system? What was it like?
Tournaments always flopped due to there being little to no interest in HW and no support for it after Ensemble got the axe. The ranking system was based on TrueSkill, the same system Halo 3 uses. Unfortunately, it only worked if you managed to find a game within the first 5 seconds of searching. As for competitive play, Warthog and Banshee spam as well as Brute and Suicide Grunt rushes were commonplace in 2s and 3s. As for 1v1, things were a bit more complex. Warthogs were still prevalent, but Tanks were more common. Banshees, not so much. The best combo for the Covies was Hunters and Jackals and the goal of the UNSC was to cripple the opponent early on with Hog harassment and then steamroll the enemy base with Tanks before the opposing army was built up.
It’s much more complex than that, but it’s simply impossible to explain it all in a brief manner. I refer you to this reddit thread for 2s and 3s and Marco Style NL’s old videos for 1s.
That’s what I understand about StarCraft 2 as well. Competetive play only really works for 1v1s. 2s and 3s result in spams and cheeses or something.
Everything was TrueSkill. There was no visible CSR only a Spartan Rank. The highest rank being General. I personally had the most fun in 2s and 3s. Never played GB for HW1, but the community was very small regardless. HW2 GB ladder is a desert. 8 players for singles ladder 5 players for doubles/triples ladder.
My advice is to play HW2 through the “pre-season” till ranked play gets released then grind ranked. GB will most likely not exist this year for this game.
Also, nowadays, 2nd accounts are everywhere in the 1v1 playlist. Almost everyone has a 2nd account. 'Tis quite annoying to have to check the enemy’s gamerscore every game.
Yeah, I’m not planning on playing it competitively. I was just curious.
