What types of multiplayer maps do you want?

The various Halo have had tons of different maps and all the games have had a certain of map. For Infinite, what type(s) of mp map(s) do you hope make it into the game?

I’m not as well versed in MP as many others here, but I will provide examples of maps I want to see in future games:

  • Blood Gulch from CE - Midship from CE - Lockout from H2 - Ascension from H2 - Containment from H2 - Sandbox from H3I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting, but these were some of the best imo.

The hope is lots of maps.

Apparently the old Halo engine was very hard to program for… and making maps was quite the endeavour (which also makes the add on of Forge a remarkable achievement).

I’m sure that Slipspace will be custom designed to overcome all the previous barriers.

So my hope is;

  1. Lots of new maps;
  • new alien planets / environments.
  • dynamic time of day and weather conditions
  • more destructible objects
  1. Lots of old maps; ideally they make it easy to import / convert maps from older games.

  2. Lots of high quality Forge maps. Because the new Slipspace engine is made with Forge in mind… I expect Forge maps to be nigh on indistinguishable from non-Forge maps.

I just want maps that look and feel unique from one another. Say what you will about Halo 4’s mulitplayer, but it was the last Halo game that had unique and memorable multiplayer maps. Every map in Halo 5 (thanks to advanced mobility) plays exactly the same.

I could list endless maps that I’d love to see remade for Infinite and all the reasons why, but I’ll limit myself to 2 points.

  1. Less of an over-reliance on Forge built maps, at least at the start. Don’t get me wrong, some of the Forge maps in Halo 5 these days are -Yoink!- incredible! But when BTB was added to Halo 5, post launch I might add, the maps for it were pretty much a slap in the face. Highly detailed Spartans running around on maps that would make even CE turn in it’s grave.
    Infinite’s Forge may be leaps and bounds beyond what even 5 has to offer, so I might not even have to be worried to be honest.

  2. I’d like to see visual call backs to previous games using the Skyboxes.
    How cool would it be to have a desert style map, and just off in the distance is the wreckage of the Pillar of Autumn? Or a human city themed map, with what is clearly the skyline of New Mombassa, with the space elevator and Covenant Carrier hanging in the distance? This would add literally NOTHING to the game-play aspect of the maps, but would be fun little nods to the previous games in the series, and be recognisable to long time fans of the series.

Gimme a remake of terminal from h2 and give us a variety of maps that aren’t ripped straight from the campaign and I’m good

I’d like to see these former maps:
CE: Blood Gulch, Timberland, Chill out, Hang em high, Boarding action (snipers :)), prisoner, Derelict, Damnation
H2: Warlock, Relic, midship, Turf, Beaver creek, Sanctuary, containment, gemini, Elongation
H3: Onslaught, Amplified, Construct, Pit, Valhalla, Guardian
HR: Tempest, Highlands, Countdown

A good mix of arena, and BTB maps. I would like to see map packs, with reimagined community forge maps that are popular. Take the creativity and give it a graphical face lift.

I think the best thing to do would be to have a good blend of new maps and old maps, and the new maps should have some noticible differences from the old ones but still look, feel, and play like the old ones. the best example of this is bloodline from h2a in my opinion. it’s also important to not rely entirely on fan made forge maps for a game mode like halo 5 did with btb, and also avoid trying so hard to make the maps hyper balanced and competitive like that we end up with another halo 5 or hw2 situation where every other map feels the same and plays similarly. I guess the overall thing to keep in mind is have variety that allows for a map for every type of game.

far as what maps I think would be fun to return,

  • valhalla - noctus - battle creek - avalanche - exhile - noctus - sandtrap - countdown - guardian - cold storageagain, with some kind of unique modifications to the maps.

I want btb maps like they were in 3. New ones in 4 and 5 are like arena type maps

I want Haven to return. Mercy was nice and all bringing back the layout but I prefer the brighter forerunner theme of Haven. The pre-covenant sangheili design of Mercy was dark and depressing. I want more vibrant and bright maps like what Halo 4 had.

I want more asymmetric maps. I want maps with a clear visual language that -Yoink!- in navigation. I want maps with more verticality. I want maps that try to build around some interesting piece of central geometry rather than just being boxes with some walls blocks and ramps. I want maps that do something more with movement than just the bare minimum. Maps with more dynamic elements would also be fun to see, though perhaps more in the BTB space. I would also like to see something more experimental with, e.g., a large piece of moving geometry that is integral to the flow of the map.

Map design under 343i has been pretty stagnant. They’ve honed in on making basic symmetric maps that are safe but uninspired. The maps that are asymmetric lack any central concept that’d make them distinct. We’ve somehow gone from no dynamic elements in CE, to lots of small experimentation in Halo 2, and then back to nothing.

With how neglected map design has been over the past years, there is a lot that can actually be done. Even just artistically. I mean, there are only four arena maps in Halo 5 that don’t fit the description “a human installation with white walls, rounded corners, and some cylinders”.

EDIT: Importantly, I don’t want remakes. When you get only ten or so maps at launch, and those maps need to come in a variety of sizes, every remake significantly reduces the potential for innovation. There should be at most one really carefully chosen remake that is not a remake of a map that has already been remade a billion times.
