So I have been playing halo for 15-16 years now, it’s the reason I got a xbox in high school. I always knew about the books, but I didn’t start reading them until recently (literally like a week ago). I started with The Fall of Reach (everywhere I read said to start with this one), which has been a great read so far. I was not expecting the level of detail that it goes into, it’s great. When I finish this one, what’s the next book I should read? Their has to be some kind of order to them no?
Now you’re onto Halo: First Strike, which takes place right after Combat Evolved.
Great, thanks! Is their a list of these books in order somewhere so I dont have to keep asking when I’m close to finishing a book? lol I’ll probably drive everyone crazy.

I’ll write one up. I know they have a list in a thread somewhere, but I feel this will be a bit easier.
- Cryptum
- Primordium
- Silentium
- Contact Harvest
- Cole Protocol
- Fall of Reach
- The Flood (Halo:CE novelization)
- First Strike
- Ghosts of Onyx
- Glasslands
- The Thurday War
- Mortal Dictada
- Last Light
- Hunters in the Dark
I did leave a few out like New Blood, Shadow of Intent, and Broken Circle. The first 2 are digital mini novels, and the last one takes place in 2 different timelines, so I left it out of mine. But this should be a mostly complete list of the novels in chronological order.
Great, thanks! I really appreciate it!

What he posted is the chronological order of the novels. I believe it’s a good idea to read the fall of reach, first strike then ghosts of onyx before moving on to anything else. My recommendation after finishing the Nylund novels is reading the Forerunner Saga, specifically Cryptum, Primordium and Silentium, in that order. After that, you could pretty much read the rest of the novels in any order, which the exception of the Kilo Five trilogy, which are Glasslands, Thursday War and Mortal Dictata.
Halo: Evolutions is a good read as well. It’s a bunch of short stories placed into a single novel, which each of the short stories taking place at numerous periods of time, ranging from the time of the Forerunners, to the Insurrection, the Covenant war and even the post war period.
If you’re looking for a good canon order, cia391 is the man to see. He maintains a pretty accurate record of Halo Canon

Thats a really good list, thank you!
I would say read The Flood, but one half of it is just a novelisation of CE with extra bits added, while the other contains characters that are only introduced in the book itself other than a few PoA crew from TFoR, so you can skip it if you like and move strait to First Strike.

I wouldn’t skip it. That was a great book!
