On the topic of Halo 5. I personally think that the “spartans” out of all the Halo games, these are the most horrendous of the bunch. Not only are their textures lacking, but the proportions are all disgusting. Im not really sure what happened here, and looking at the Halo Infinite artwork and gameplay that is public, 343 is clearly capable of creating somewhat proper proportion characters.
Basically what I am curious about is if anyone has any insight into why they look just so horrible in Halo 5. Maybe the art lead changed, or maybe something else. I mean, the couldn’t even keep basic design principals together to make it feel coherent in the Halo universe. They missed like 4 key features on the ODST helmet, for example.
Yes, but Nightfall isn’t ODST. It looks similar but it’s based on the gear the ONI operatives wore in the Halo Nightfall series. In my opinion, it’s my favorite armor set in all of Halo 5! It has a modest, simple, clean design (visor also doesn’t feature that whack hexagonal pattern) unlike most of the visually busy, bulky, and just straight out wacky armor and helmets. I’ve been wearing the Nightfall set since I first played Guardians, and even though I tried other sets like Noble and Mark IV & V, I can’t seem to detach myself from the Nightfall. It’s the only set I have no complaints with its design (besides the colored tech suits). Though, that is just me, and I’m proud to be one of the few Spartans who dons the full set. I feel it really stands apart from the rest of the Spartan IV armor (excluding the Reach inspired ones). Anyway, I believe a better counterpart to the ODST helmet is Helljumper.

Im not saying all the designs are bad, but the realization of them. I think what I dislike the most is the proportions… they just feel SO off. But yea fair enough
all halo have their qualities and their defects, for me it is true that the proportion of the spartan in halo 5 is a little badly made, but not with all the armors.

Did a quick search and came back with yes, the leading art director did in fact change between 4 & 5. For 4 it was Kenneth Scott, for 5 it was Nicolas Bouvier.

This kind of changes of art director in franchises always has a notable impact.

Agreed. That said, I don’t have a problem really with it’s art style. The spartans feel perhaps a bit bulkier, but in actual gameplay nothing looks or feels off to me. Just in the posing segments sometimes they look kinda barrel chested and whatnot. I found initial campaign gameplay to be the biggest adjustment for me in terms of art style, but after adjustment even that feels normal to me. But definitely agree you can notice a major change in artstyle between even 4 and 5.
