Match making is probably struggling with lower numbers.

Minor point, but it was actually Microsoft.

Geee i wonder what problems could’ve caused it
It couldn’t be the dysync or lag
Or the fact that the sbmm prioritizes “fairness” by putting you into matches that lag a lot due to said sbmm thinking that you should be paired with people outside your server region due to the fact more players are in your skill range in that region
Its like i predicted that it would lead to extended search times or something
Combine that with the fact there’s no actual xp or levels(outside of the battle pass and ranked modes)
Hard to put all the blame on SBMM.
We know that SBMM increases player retention. And that the most significant factor in players logging out is unfair matches (more than personal performance or lag).
So hopefully 343 are putting all their resources into the real reason the population is dropping; desync, content, and Forge.
And the system putting you in said unfair matches(ie lag filled and dysync ridden) isn’t a issue?
Like i said the sbmm has its hand in causing players to leave(and in turn made matches take longer to find like i said it would) as it doesn’t care if you get into a extremely laggy match or not and as mentioned by others any type of connection screw up leads to dysync being there
Heck even new players despise getting constant lag and dysync as its not fun to be shot behind walls or having melees take 1 to 2 seconds to register
Or having grenades and rockets vanishing
the game should prioritize connection when it picks the server region not the skill level as it has put people in servers they don’t belong in
I just think it’s important to separate out the issues.
For example desync is a separate issue to ranking and matchmaking. Conflating them isn’t helpful.
I’m sure it does.
But the data suggests that even more people leave without it.
I was under the impression that desync was largely independent of lag / connection. Wasn’t it happening at the LAN tournaments?
I think the game should restructure it’s scoring and format to incorporate handicapping of some sort.
If you can put players of all levels into a game to compete against each other fairly then you don’t have to worry about skill base - you can connect entirely on connection speeds.
You could simply change the scoring system. Points for each kill are recalibrated to the skill of the killer and the victim. A poor player killing a star player would get maximum points… and a skilled player can go on killing sprees (making them happy) but they don’t necessarily get many points for it.
In fact the good players may enjoy it more - as there is potentially more kills to be had before the game is won.
The very big fish in any small pond may be further nerfed by having power weapons and or equipment made unavailable to them. It may even be as subtle as having fewer shots in the chamber. Minnows that are struggling to swim upstream could spawn with extra weapons (or even an OS).
We know that the main factor keeping players online is the closeness of the game. As long as the player feels they had a chance to win they will keep playing.
And i know that the closeness of a game is just an illusion from my point of view. If i don’t get at least 20-25 kills, sometimes even more, i know i’m gonna lose that match 90% of the time, unless i’m matched with pro hcs players ( in this case, i’d be the one getting carried)
Bad idea. In a perfect world this would solve all problems. But in the real world, a single player’s performance can vary by a lot, in my case, i think it’s even more than 150 points. And then most games would get unbalanced again because for example, a player that is supposed to be good isn’t getting as many kills as he should and he also gets less points at the same time
And anyways, let me tell you that this game doesn’t prioritize connection, On Modern Warfare 2, a 13 year old game with 450 peak players on steam, you find lobbies in EU all the time, very quickly.
Infinite has more than 10 times the peak population of mw2, yet for some reason it’s become very hard to find matches on EU servers. You can’t tell me that there aren’t 7 other eu players searching at any given time.
And i know your answer: " well it means they aren’t as skilled as you so you can’t match them" but i don’t agree at all with this reasoning.
This is a huge problem 343 refuses to fix because they have the same opinion as you. I doubt the peopulation lost to bad connection will EVER come back
You certainly seem to “know” some things. I think 343 forgot to make sure that their broader audience “knows” the things.
343 loves to tell us that they know better than us how we should enjoy playing their games. But more and more people don’t enjoy it like 343 thinks they should and just stop playing. I think 343’s data set is off. Lies, damn lies, and statistics. 343 needs to go back to the drawing board and reexamine what they think they “know” because this game is not retaining players.
We know that form can fluctuate. And yep, up to +/- 150 MMR on any given day (according to Menke re: Halo 5).
And no match-making system can predict which way an individual is going to go on any particular day.
Currently the system prioritises skill matching over connection.
This has pros and cons.
And while I firmly believe it’s more pro than con - I do also agree that it would be good to somehow focus back on connection (and speed of match making).
Get the best of both worlds.
But this introduces the biggest con is that it creates mismatched games (which we know is the biggest driver for people to log off and do something else).
So, if you want to prioritise connection you have to make adjustments for skill.
Scoring just seemed the best way to do it.
And if a player drops out and/or someone rejoins you can easily rejig the scoring on the fly to keep the match even.
I would even be happy with dynamic changes in the game based on player’s current K/D.
Sure, it’s somewhat artificial. But people keep saying that they just want to jump on and play with their mates. They just want to play and not have to sweat. What better way to create that environment? And this way they can still run around and pump up their own tyres (K/D) while still having a closely competed game.
What are you talking about it obviously is look we just had a new player stay for a week before quitting due to being put into a laggy @$# match 5 times in a row that means strict sbmm is a success
Ignores the other new players quit after 10+ hours
There was a rank reset in the middle of Season 1.
From the waypoint blog post:
“Halo Infinite – Ranked Matchmaking Updates”
Since we saw that the CSR system was being overly generous since launch, these changes are being rolled out to help bring things closer in line to where they should be. This period led to a full tier inflation of ranks and, as a result, most players should expect to be placed a full tier lower (Diamond players will find themselves in Platinum, Platinum players will find themselves in Gold, etc.) after this rank reset.
I haven’t looked into it too much as I don’t play Infinite very much but to what nature does SBMM exist in Infinite?
In ranked I usually got even skilled games, but in some ranked games and most social games it seems that if the game thinks you’re good it will only pair you with players that go double digit negative, it makes the game tight by balancing the team against yourself rather than finding a similarly skilled matchup.
The amount of social games where I am placed with foreign silver and gold players during peak New Zealand / Australia time. Judging by MCC and previous Halos I should be able to find local only games with platinum players and above in most playlists, yet my experience is far far from that.
To give context to those not in the Oceanic region, back in Reach a month before H4 released 2 years into Reach at its lowest population, I could only search local and find games between 3pm - 11pm quickly, every day on nearly every playlist beyond team objective.
If i’m to routinely be placed in foreign games at peak times then I should at least face a lobby of players roughly in my skill range, not paired with ThumblessSteve420 every game. Skill based matchmaking should be
And the faults in finding appropriate matches is not something to chalk up to population size as it was happening in the beta and when Infinite had its initial population too.
Let me add to the list
*not placing you into servers outside your server region
*not taking skill as the first priority and not connection quality
*not use the same sbmm as ranked in social just hidden and use a separate sbmm thats loosen up a bit
*not give you johnny2034 who just installed the game and his friend kyle as teammates and having you go against a team that are around a similar skill level if not better than yours with it expecting you to carry them or it putting you into a match against super sweats and having to be carried by your team
Yup the game is 100% broken because 343 fails to do anything right…
