What the hell happened to the Wraith?

When I first saw it in The Sprint looking all disjointed and skeletal I figured that it was just probably a work in progress model.

But no, it looks like they really are going for this look. Why is it so…ugly? I mean even besides that 343i is changing a design that has been more or less consistent throughout the entire series, the classic wraith is iconic to Halo. I mean seriously?

Not only that but the visual design doesn’t even make artistic sense. Floating and disjointed bits are Forerunner tropes not Covenant.

The Wraith is a tank, tanks are supposed to look bulky and threatening. This just looks like it missed too many meals and will fall apart in the wind.

I hate to be cynical but this new Wraith is just ugly and awful all around.

I like it.

I don’t know, I’m kind of a fan of the more organic-looking Covenant designs.

Reminds me of an Elites face and still feel like it fits with the covenant theme too. Maybe there’s a lore reason behind the change we haven’t heard yet, other than the Covenant bringing a new variant of the Wraith to the front lines.

Looks someone cross bred the Revenant and Wraith together.

The new Wraith design looks bad IMO. When I first saw it, I figured maybe, for some reason, they were still working on the vehicle model and deciding what they want it to look like int he final game, so they just left part of it blank, but I’m not liking that the model was in fact the actual Wraith model. No idea why they changed it, especially to what it looks like now

Probably a new design choice by the Covenant to make them faster and more agile. They have been so slow in previous games. I didn’t think they looked bad, plus I’ll take the improved performance over look

Kind of a side-note about people who never want things to change in the Halo Universe…Do you truly think that it would be a believable universe if all of the races that exist in this fictional universe are not bettering and improving their technologies constantly? Just look at us, real Humans on real non-fictional Earth…We are constantly trying to improve technologies and trying to one-up other nations. Do you think that the UNSC and the Covenant wouldn’t be developing new tools/vehicles/etc?

I do wish the classic look to be retained, but I really just hope the damn main cannons on the wraith and scorpion are done properly. Seriously, I love Halo 4, but the guns on the tanks were muy pathetic.

I approve. It reminds me of the droid tank, and the phaeton reminds me of the droid carrier. I would rather have redesigns than the same model slightly changed again.

Why are they destroying our beloved designs?

The Wraith is not supposed to be agile. If you want an agile Covenant mortar then get a Revenant. No one said things shouldn’t change but if you’re taking on an established franchise you don’t go and change every single classic design that has been consistent for 14 years. This doesn’t even look like a -Yoink- tank.

Because they have a “vision”.

Hunters in the Dark touched on something like this. Not a spoiler, but apparently the Sangheili are finding value in designs and such from the pre-Covenant days of the Sangheili.

I swear, I’m getting really -Yoinking!- tired of 343 changing a design, and people saying the old design was iconic.
Saying it’s iconic means I could take a picture of the Wraith, walk down the street and get a decent number of people to recognize it. Like the pickax from Minecraft, the Lancer from Gears, but not the -Yoinking!- Wraith from Halo.

I sorta agreed when it was the Rocket Launcher, but I know people who have played Halo that wouldn’t recognize the Wraith.

That looks -Yoinking!- awesome!

Looks like 343 is really fervent into the idea of giving the covenant a more traditionalist, arthropodal design rather than the old empirical, cetacean design. I like some of the new designs, like the new banshee and ghost, but this one seems really off for me.

I’m assuming that’s not a wraith but a new vehicle…if not 343i just messed up another classic design.

Anyone who is building a tank would obviously want it to be fast and agile as that increases effectiveness on a battlefield, but technical or budget limitations at the time would limit design choices. If the Covenant figured out a way to make Wraiths equally effective but more agile, then they would obviously do it. Think universe here.

Many years (in-universe) have passed since the events Halo 1, and the covenant engineers who never left world would have obviously been building new tech in this time. 343 has done a great job at advancing the lore and making the universe more complete and believable. Seeing enhancements like this just make the universe more believable and interesting

It’s hard to tell due to video resolution. I like some of the basic idea of the new one though, there’s some oddness though. If its following the trend of the banshee it might be offsetting its lighter armor with shields.

Its still iconic to the brand. You say Halo and people who know Halo will think of many things and the wraith will without a doubt be up there.
