After activating the cartographer in the Ark on Halo 3, Spark seems surprised at something he sees on the Ark, saying ‘oh my’. The chief asks what it is but I don’t think we find out as the action starts again. Does anyone know what he’s referring to?
I never really questioned this, but I think it might be because he finds out the ark makes Halo rings? Correct me if I’m wrong.
Spark seemed to be transfixed on the central region where the forge for the Halo array was. You’ll notice he’s caught in some type of trance while staring at the holographic display that Chief had to snap him out of as the Covenant arrived. I suspect he was likely putting two and two together to realise that another ring was being developed. His subsequent declaration that they needed to stop Truth from “destroying all” seemed particularly emphatic. I suspect by that point he was already resolved to defend this potential ring.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks. Been wondering that for years now!
I took it to be that he realized the Ark was designed to build Halo rings. Due to information compartmentalization, he was totally unaware of this feature until he got a chance to check out the cartographer with Arby and Chief. And since Spark lost his own ring, he saw the Ark could make him a new one.

Spark dosen’t have full extensive knowledge of all the forerunner installations for security reasons should one be infected they would only know about that overrun ring. therefore although he knew more about his ring he was figuring out about the ark and the other rings for the first time himself with the chief. I imagine things were much grander scale than he imagined…
I think he was surprised to find something that he could take care of and he was also Happy.
Spark was surprised that the Arks Foundaries were in the process of creating a new ring. In fact if you listen closely, you may hear him murmuring about it after the cutscene.
Spark was not fully aware of its status until The Covenant ending cutscene if I’m remembering right.
I’d wager the Halo being built. Spark had no idea the Ark made the rings and even admits as much because of the compartmentalization of his knowledge. The Forerunners only had their creations know about their installations in case they were captured by the Flood.
