What Short Story Should I Write?

So lately I’ve been invested in the idea of writing a short story about a character or event in the Halo Universe, and I’m having trouble deciding what to do. Don’t worry I’m not gonna publish it, I don’t feel like getting sued. Should I write a backstory about Noble Six in his time of taking down militia groups and working for ONI? Or do I write from the perspective of a Sangheili during the Great Schism, and what is was like for the average Covenant soldier; what side they had to choose, what side their friends chose, etc. Tell me if I should do either, or if you have a completely different idea that you would like to see let me know!

My, very swiftly derailed thanks to buying a house, NaNoWriMo effort this year was about a grizzled Marine veteran at the end of the Covenant War into the post-War period struggling with identity, PTSD and battle fatigue. Really hope I get to go back to it, but time’s not my friend.

Personally I like to come up with new characters and make use of canon settings/events in ways which fit the canon without disrupting it. I don’t like writing pre-existing characters as they’re not ‘mine’.

I’ve tried Covvie characters in the past, but it’s really difficult to write them well because they have such a different composition and different things driving them - humanity isn’t a quality you can apply.

That sounds like a really engaging story. I think I might take your advice and create my own character for the story, but include pre-existing characters as a means of connecting my story to the greater scheme of things. And what you said about not being able to apply humanity to the Covenant, yes it is hard to write about a species that isn’t like us, but I believe that’s what can make the story so much more interesting. A story about how the Covenant species react to a certain situation unlike humans. It can show the contrast between humanity and the Covenant even more.
P.S. good luck with the house buying, it ain’t easy.

Good luck to you too. Absolutely agree about the Covenant: not easy but rewarding certainly.

P.S. The buying was the easy bit. The rennovations since are what’s nearly killed us. Moving in in 10 days so may yet!

Your Noble Six idea’s the more unique of the two, I think. I am honestly, legitimately surprised that we don’t have any novels focusing on Noble Team or Noble Six before the fall of Reach yet.

They’ve released yet another novel focused on the Master Chief during the war. Yet another comic about Linda.

But there’s NO extended media for Noble Team, with the exception of Reach advertising.

How about a story based on Headhunters? I believe they are the most under-developed part of Halo canon, and you have a lot of creative freedom with the ability to connect the story to greater events in the universe. I would 100% read it if you made a thread with the story, then personal messaged me a link are at least where I could find the story. I picture the plot being you are with a fellow Headhunter on a mission, you start of with a stealthy insertion, complete two out of three objectives with relative ease and a few bumps in the road but you are all set to celebrate this easy victory, the final objective then goes sideways, suddenly a Covenant fleet appears overhead, the Headhunters need to make it back to their Stealth Prowler and get out of the system, can they do it? That’s a template I have but as long as one of them survives that’s good enough for me.

How about about a more detailled story of Faber, the master builder since there almost very few information on him

When Reach came out I loved the firefight map Unearthed and thought about writing a short story (might still) about why the Covenant attacked that part of Reach. It was the only map that didn’t have a back story and i always thought it was odd that the Covenant would send an invasion force there. My story idea is having the protagonist be an Orion participate who was an demolition expert at the titanium mine when the Covenant attacked.

Not true. Check this out for a fully detailed profile and history of Faber. Faber-of-Will-and-Might - Character - Halopedia, the Halo wiki
Sorry I can’t link it, I don’t believe I am a high enough rank to do so, however if I can, then I don’t know how to do it yet.

Thanks a lot !
I will definitely check into it !
Much appreciated !

Personally, I think a couple of stories about the backstories of the Noble team members would be really cool. My ideas would be about how they came to the S-III program (except for Jorge, where you could show some of his past missions, or some stuff as an early recruit), e.g. how their parents died, why they hated the covenant, etc etc.

I’m currently writing the background of how my ODST became a Spartan. You could write some Spartan Training stories.

Just remember to make sure if he was originally an ODST, he can only be a Spartan-IV

Yes. I don’t have many OCs that are Spartan-IIs or IIIs.

I just finished graduating high school and after a three week hiatus from the forum, I will be starting the story tonight and will make sure to put in the a new thread.

word on the streets is that there is a noted Halo author working on the Nobel 6 backstory. Ending is supposed to be more informative than the game. We shall see if this is rumor or truth eventually. either way, if it’s just for fun there are so many characters to choose from, why limit your story to just one?
