After playing the Beta, I’ll admit I had fun with Halo 5. However I got to thinking about it and I have one question:
What makes Halo 5 different?
What I mean is, what about this particular game will set it apart from other tyrannical franchises of the same genre? All the “new” mechanics, all the old maps redone, they seem to be familiar to something thats already been done before.
If I buy Halo 5, will I experience a game that revolutionizes the genre of FPS’s? Or will it be similar to when I bought MW3, and had fun, but nothing kept me coming back?
I haven’t played Titanfall or Gears 3 or AW, but from what I’ve read and seen Halo 5 isn’t really blazing a new trail here. I would be happy for someone to tell me differently because I would like nothing better than for my favorite FPS to be back on top, and I think that can only happen if they bring a uniqueness to it like the Halo’s of old did in their time.
Basically how it is a hybrid of old and new school style Halo?
Quality strafe combat… which is something Halo 5 was lacking imo.
Hitboxes were too big, and base movement speed was too slow.
Why is 343 under orders to “revolutionize” the genre?
What’s wrong with a nice, gradual evolution?
Rome wasn’t built in a day.
[insert aphorism encouraging patience here].

“Why is 343 under orders to “revolutionize” the genre?”—Why would you have any other goal in mind? I really hope that as a video game designer your mission with a new game isn’t to make a generic game that’s been done a million times already.
“What’s wrong with a nice, gradual evolution?” --Is Halo 5 even this or are all of the so called additions just been-there-done-that mechanics that we’ve seen before. The more saturated the market becomes the harder it is to stand out. As something that is purely for my entertainment I’m allowed to hope for big things.
But bottom line, your post didn’t contribute much to this thread besides playing devil’s advocate with no real point.

Disagree.
And here’s the thing. When a movie sequel comes out, it advances the story - it isn’t necessarily (or almost ever) about changing the way movies are made.
Carrying the analogy forward… I want to know what happens to the MC next, but I don’t want to re-learn game physics, re-learn weapon dynamics, re-learn how to game. I can re-learn those things, and I do with every new Halo, but that doesn’t add to the experience, it gets in the way.
Sorry in advance for not adding anything to the conversation… maybe I misunderstood your post.

It seems we’re looking at it from two different perspectives. I have very minor interest in the MC’s story and am more concerned with Multiplayer.
And perhaps you’re right, maybe these sort of ideas should come from a new franchise entirely.

Halo has always been about the story MP is just a side section for Halo. So by your comment i’m not really sure your a Halo fan.

Hmmm, well seeing as how Halo was the Father of Competitive console gaming due to its Multiplayer, and millions of people played the Multiplayer for years after each game was released, and Multiplayer is what gives an FPS its replayability I would have to say that it is a very LARGE part of why Halo became such a popular franchise.
Yes, the story each campaign tells is compelling, and yes I’ve played each campaign. But have I spent hundreds of hours playing the Campaign over and over? No, and I highly doubt many people have.
But, I bet there are countless people who have spent that much time in MATCHMAKING, countless people who have played thousand and thousands of ranked matches in multiplayer. So just because you think campaign is more important from your narrow-minded perspective don’t you dare tell me i’m not a Halo fan. Thats just an ignorant statement through and through.
Matty, I’m seriously not the “return to Halo 3” purist who thinks that altering a hit box by one pixel is heresy.
But put yourself in 343’s shoes. You are the keeper of this franchise, and you already have a community which is bitterly divided on everything from sprint to… the size of the hit box. Every single decision you make will guarantee a horde of players coming to these forums to go ballistic about whatever happens to be their pet peeve of the moment. You can’t please everyone, and it seems most of the time as if you can’t please anyone at all. I’ll make the New Coke analogy. You can look it up. People don’t want what’s best. They want what they know. This is why innovation, which is already a challenge to any developer, is a thousand times harder for an established title.

Trueee but when a movie sequel also changes director there are huge differences in style everything from camera angles to te pace of the movie. That’s exactly wha t halo 5 is, a sequel under different Directions

Good list, Halo 5 is very different…and thank god the BR is balanced…
Sprint, Thruster, Clamber and all his crappy “balance”

Same directors as H4: 343 Industries. But point taken.
And to Matty: you’re absolutely right that while campaign may get people into the game, it is definitely multiplayer that keeps them coming back month after month, and year after year. I guess I just don’t want to see a bunch of change merely for the sake of change. If you can’t bring something new to the game that has function and purpose beyond novelty value, then why bother? And the things I saw in the beta that were “new” don’t seem to be adding anything particularly innovative to gameplay. When H6 launches without ground pound, spartan charge, or clamber, I don’t think anyone will miss them.
Long and short. You’re a guy with a gun and you shoot stuff. If you try to make it too much more complicated than that… well, I just don’t know what.
