What places on earth should 343 take inspiration from?

I’ve always been a little amazed with Halo scenery, ever since Combat Evolved. Lol I remember the first time playing on The Silent Cartographer and just having my mind blown. The large scale map layouts and beautiful set pieces have always made it easy for me to get lost in the universe.

This got my thinking, what places in earth should 343 look to draw inspiration from when designing the next Halo?

It’s pretty apparent at this point the next instalment will include large environments. So for me personally I’d pick Alaska. I think Alaska is great place to draw inspiration because the Lakes and coastlines are just beautiful to stare at.

But what would you pick and why?

Thanks guys

One thing I’ve always wanted to see more on in halo was earth. It would be awesome if some multiplayer maps were set in cities like New York, London, LA etc.

New Zealand is a beautiful destination, who knows the scenery could be used to create the home world of one of former covenant species

Antarctica to give off that frozen vibe from halo wars 1.

I think they should take a lot of cues from underwater locations, especially when building the campaign levels. Halo 5 campaign had its story faults, but what they did do incredibly well was the environments. To me, a lot of them actually looked alien. We as humans don’t have a lot of information about what other livable planets may look like, so I have always thought that there is great inspiration that can be found under the sea.

Given the supposed location of Halo Infinite, I want to see more wildlife and crazy environments!

I think between the Twelve Apostles and the Daintree Rainforest, they may have already taken inspiration from Australia as well (but I’m not sure if that was officially stated?). However, I think Australian pink lakes, coral reefs and glow worm caves would be cool. I’d like to see more desert gorges.

From memory, I think nearly every Halo game has used really bland, lifeless snow maps. So some kind of taiga or craggy terrain covered in snow would be cool (That would be very Alaska like you suggested). Parts of the Hemorrhage map on Reach kind of remind me of Alaska, but I tend to agree with you about the Alaska thing, particularly because there’s been a lot of jungles, but seemingly not as much forest.

And honestly, kind of on the topic of forests, they’ve never really done a map during the shift autumn to winter (that I’m aware of). Either the vivid, warm colors of autumn or even the dead branches right before winter would be nice. And I would love to see Georgia with its beautiful trees with their dangling leaves and swamps. I suppose there were swamps in Halo: CE, but it’s been awhile, you know?

I love everything you’ve just said. Twelve Apostles gives me a Last Resort type feel and Daintree rainforest kinda reminds me of the first mission in Halo 3. Ultimately, I just want the game to look as pretty as possible really

Pretty much. Environmentally, I’m in it for the atmosphere and the lore. I’d be interested to know in terms of Halo rings which environments the Forerunners were interested in, and particularly if there are some environments that maybe be particularly different from terrestrial ones, like some of the environments in Halo 5. And I’d love to see more of the Covenant homeworlds.

And like THEROWEBOT253 said, I mainly think it would awesome to see more of the futuristic cities on Earth, how their technologically has evolved, how they’ve recovered, and how they incorporate art and technology into their infrastructure.

Yeah the reason that you see so many barren, cold snowy settings in the earlier Halo’s had to do with the Forerunner’s purposely controlling the environment, because it turns out the cold really affected the flood’s ability to thrive. In any case regardless, I wouldn’t mind seeing some more environments in the future.

I think maybe places like Ireland would be good to set up a baseline plan. Wide open green plains, mixed with rivers, rolling hills, and mysterious monolithic portal dolmens and cairns scattered all over. The occasional castle and fort hinting at a civilisation that once was. Places like that are always good for designing something Forerunner.

I’d love to see more wintery settings though but with more features. I never particularly liked the bland snowy ravine that was a good portion of Halo CE. Norwegian fjords look nice no matter what, but winter areas are especially good for incorporating mountains, and I think we need to see some more verticality (if that’s even a word).

Sydney, I’m reading The Thursday War & the Prologue takes place at Bravo & it’s where I live and would love to see it, if not then I’ll still enjoy the game

Scandinavia.

Thick deep alpine forests featuring mist, rain, snow.

A large, wide, shallow, partially active caldera. Racing warthogs around it in a vehicular combat situation. Perhaps there is an enemy research base inside this caldera, and it’s defended by a bunch of enemy vehicles. The UNSC sends in a group of vehicles to secure the base. Lots of racing around, with plenty of opportunities for A.I. drivers to show off! : )

Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland is beautiful.

It honestly depends on what part of the Halo we’re on.

If we’re in a rolling grassland, definitely Ireland! Ireland is known for its lush greenery and legendary ancient structures that tell tales through the ages. It’s a gorgeous place for sure!

If it’s a more tundra like atmosphere, definitely places like Alaska or Greenland which are more common to see expanses of white while still retaining an abundance of life.
