I’ve played Halo 3, Halo Reach, and now Halo 4 but am just now getting into Forge. Even if Halo 4 may not be the best Forge in the series, I want to create maps that are enjoyable and exciting to play on for people to experience. I’ve made one map so far, created with balance as my main objective. I will be uploading to my file share soon if any one would like to give me some criticism!
But I came here to ask all you pro-Forgers out there, or even regular players who know what they like in a map…
What makes a good map? Just look at Halo 2 and Halo 3. The graphics and art styles allowed the maps to be good looking without all of the awful visual clutter in later games, there were some awesome interactive elements, spawns and weapons were balanced, vehicles were placed appropriately, the maps were designed to flow well, there was incentive to move around, camping spots were limited, some maps were symmetrical arena type maps and some were asymmetrical larger maps. The maps took a very long time to get boring, most played well competitively and objectively, and most important of all, they were fun.
I appreciate the input. Any way you can elaborate on a few things?
What TO YOU makes a map flow well? Well-place spawn points? Attractive places to move to (maybe you spot a -Yoink!- sniper rifle that spawned across the map from you)?
How I’ve made my first map… there are some camping spots for people who like to fight for a vantage point, but there are counters. They are not 100% protected while in that camping spot, and the spots don’t give them the ultimate view of the entire map. There are certain spots to control certain areas of the map. Is this a good idea for Halo? or is there something that Halo players enjoy more than playing via countering your enemy/countering a counter?
