I third this! And yes, I think the biggest part of the success was from the LAN events where countless all-nighters were spent playing CE with players itching to play more after a fun filled night

Can I vote for “All of the above”? 
I think that the mystery of it all was a big selling point. You encounter this mysterious ring world created by ancient aliens, and all of their structures on the surface are empty at first. Then there’s the mystery of the Flood. The game really did have a good atmosphere of discovery.
Apart from all the above, I think the fact it blew gaming out of proportion and was ahead of it’s time made it an even better first game!
Bungie came out punching from the get go, as it should be!
