What made Halo 5's campaign so bad?

I thought that Halo 5 had a good campaign. Not as good as Halo 3’s and Halo 4’s campaign. I have not yet seen Hunt the Truth and I see a lot of people hate Halo 5’s campaign because it was nothing like Hunt the Truth. How do you know Hunt the Truth took place during Halo 5 or had anything to do with Halo 5? It could be a preview on what’s coming in Halo 6. Hunt the Truth isn’t really a reason to hate on Halo 5’s campaign. Look at it for what it is and not what you expected it to be and give me a legitimate reason why it was so bad.

Lack of chief, bland characters, lack of story, an anticlimactic climax between chief and Locke, lack of arbiter, they didn’t flesh out any of the characters on blue team, unless you read the books then you don’t know who they are.

They throw hints about the time frame in Hunt the Truth and give the illusion of where it was heading. The story was interesting but a bit deceiving in a few areas. It started out as a hired reporter learning about where the Spartans really came from and trying to get ONI on it. They were playing him the whole time and the second season was one of their agents going rogue. It takes place when the Guardians are being uncovered. The campaign wasn’t horrible but was hoping for a little more depth into the story, but it seemed more like a build up for the next installment.

All of this, plus :

  • Poor writing, thanks to a terrible lead writer
  • Cutscenes that just end mid-sentence
  • No meaningful interactions between any characters
  • No character development
  • Cortana becoming a stereotypical evil “I WILL DESTROY ALL OF YOU FOR NO REASON!” villain with any explanation as to why she’s changed
  • A complete disconnect between this game and Halo 4 (where was the Didact? He was such a good villain)
  • No explanation as to why Dr. Halsey and Palmer are best friends now instead of wanting to kill each other
  • Why is Halsey no longer considered to be a war criminal?
  • A total waste of Jul M’dama, the best villain in any Halo game. He just dies to make Locke look badass
  • Mis-characterization of Blue Team. They’re not emotionless robots
  • No exploration of Chief’s emotions
  • No exploration of the family ties between Blue Team
  • No elaboration on the Domain’s true nature. It’s a Precursor artifact, yet there’s nothing about that at all
  • Who’s Warden Eternal and why is he friends with Cortana?
  • Why aren’t the Prometheans under Jul’s control anymore? I prefer it this way, but they should have explained that. There is undoubtedly more stuff people will bring up, but Halo 5’s campaign is a mess.

That pretty much sums it up

While I agree I wanted to point out that they do explain Cortana being evil she entered the promethean domain and is now thinking like them as she now has access to tons of information. Basically was possessed by the Didact

The campaign was ok. Not terrible, but not captivating either.

  • As it has been said, Locke and his team had no background (expect for the other marketing campaigns outside of the game…which we shouldn’t have to rely on to get the full story) and they similarly had no character arcs. To that point, I only know of Locke and Buck, but cannot even think of who the other two, and I think that’s telling.
  • It was nice that the campaign levels had a few avenues of approach and were not just long hallways full of enemy choke-points. And the levels were very rich and detailed, which was nice. But what really hampered the campaign, aside from the significant lack of playing as the Chief, was the inconsistent parallels between the Chief’s story levels and Locke’s story levels. And what I mean by this, is that in Halo 2, both the Arbiter’s levels and the Chief’s levels followed the same timeframe and were brought organically together. In Guardians, there are just random story jumps and the convergence of the two opposing stories felt haphazardly put together or just downright forced. That, and the non-action, “talk to the NPC’s to advance the story” levels. Those were nonsense. I appreciate 343 trying something new instead of just cutscenses, but these levels were worthless and really took away from the campaign experience. If I wanted to play Skyrim, I would. I don’t want it in Halo.
  • I’m also not a fan of the cliffhanger ending. It sucked in Halo 2 and it sucks now. I know it’s a new saga, but each game should have some ability to stand on its own and have some sort of resolution. But it just abruptly ends right when it actually starts getting interesting.
  • The last critique I have on the campaign is the repetitive boss fights. More specifically, it was irritating to have to fight Warden Eternal over and over again. I get that he is a program which has thousands of bodies, but when the only thing that separates boss fights of the same character is more of those characters to fight at the same time, that’s an insult. Even if 343 had had Warden Eternal underlings to fight at first, that would at least be something. But to go from “fight Warden Eternal” to “fight 2 Warden Eternals” to “fight 3 Warden Eternals”…c’mon.Just my two cents

This sums it up better than anything else.
