Between Halo 2 Anniversary and Halo 4 … and I’m only talking campaign here (for obvious reasons) and just gameplay, not cutscenes (for obvious reasons).
Here are some similar 1080p images for comparison:
I might have to give this one to Halo 4, but my nostalgia is saying otherwise … also the H2A shots may have been from an earlier build, so it’s probably best to wait and see. But for giggles and such, what do you guys think?
Which has better art direction? Overall graphical appeal? etc.

I think Halo 4 looks better IMO obviously H2A looks great and the cut scenes look incredible too.
Just from those screenshots, I’d almost say the halo 2 elites look better than the halo 4 knights, but even if that were true, halo 2 loses based on the foliage alone.
I really didn’t like the artistic direction Halo 4 took. Story-wise, Master Chief should be wearing the same armor in those pictures you posted. What the hell did 343 do to it?

Canonically, the armor updated itself via nanomachines. But artistically, they chose the new design to better portray him as a human rather than a robot, and it makes better functional sense as well, providing him with increased mobility. The previous design was highly restrictive. Personally I like the new armor better, it looks more human and realistic, but still identifiable.
It’s kind of hard to tell because of the different art styles. H2A sticks true to the original where the art style focused less on realism meanwhile halo 4 looks like what you’d expect future alien worlds and alien enemies to look like 550 years from now.
I’m going to side with halo 4 as being the better looking game for now but that wont be final until I’ve actually played both games on the same disc.
When it comes to pure graphical fidelity for the campaigns, I’m going to have to go with Halo 4 though it’s a close call. While Halo 2 Anniversary does look gorgeous, I can’t say that Saber’s engine really is up to par with what 343 managed to do. A big part of it could be Halo 2 Anniversary’s rather simple art style, however. Halo 4 has a lot more detail in it which may make the game look better. To make a final judgement, I’ll have to wait and see what all of Halo 2 Anniversary looks like on all the levels.
As for multiplayer, there’s no doubt that Halo 2 Anniversary looks better. After all, it’s built on top of a modified/improved Halo 4 engine, and it shows. From the shiny visors to the gorgeous vistas, this is what Halo was meant to look like.
