I swear i feel like i NEVER get a lunge when I melee someone but yet i see people melee me and lunge from like 5 feet away its so frustrating. Also i still go through people when attempting to melee thought that was fixed? With 343 you never know.
This game has player collision that functions like Minecraft’s collision. You can stand inside of someone but you get pushed out lightly. Moving into a player with a high enough speed will let you move through them. This is all disabled for teammates.
The melee lunge discrepancy could be due to lag or de-sync. There’s also a new Energy Sword in the game with a lot larger lunge range. I forget which mode it’s available in. It’s reminiscent of Halo 5’s extra powerful Warzone weapons.

I haven’t heard of a new sword - unless it’s in the FFA ninja mode (swords and grapple hooks).
Its the Duelist Energy Sword from the campaign that you can get in the loot cave in BTB. Not entirely sure why they added those variant weapons because some of them are incredibly busted but whatever works I guess?
I completely forgot about the loot caves (I don’t play much BTB).

Five feet!? Lol! That’s conservative. I’ve seen at least ten feet. I’ve also seen people lunge from bottom control to top control on Recharge. The lunge is just another broken feature that won’t get fixed for several years.
With all the desync and lack of player collision the melee is jacked. So with the wonky melee duels and homing nade bouncing. 343 has really screwed the perfection of the golden triangle combat.
Hope they keep up the great work on all the stuff no one wanted. Player outlines, no player collision, homing nades, lens flare, random vehicle drops … (audible breath inhale) … armor coatings, the drop wall, no friendly fire, nade hit markers, changes to classic modes, that annoying as blam police lights effect in the oddball… I’ll stop there before ranting about everything they should have spent time on.
WTF !!! This explains why even though they claimed they added collision with enemies, I still felt like really weird stuff was going on. ![]()
Oh yeah. The whole problem is the collision system itself. It does not work like previous Halo games at all. You don’t “bump” into enemies, you “gently get pushed out of enemies when you’re inside of them”. It’s extremely obvious if you mess around in a custom game. There’s also zero vertical collision. You can literally walk inside of an enemy player. IMO this collision system would work fine and dandy if it was enabled for teammates.
Lunge is extremely inconsistent in HI, and as others have mentioned, my best guess is that it’s due to desync (e.g., disagreements between console/server about exactly where players are)–meaning, when someone lunges at you, it’s because you appear closer on their screen than your screen. Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge could correct me.
Collision is its own problem. I don’t know the specifics, but the person who mentioned speed playing a factor seems correct. I have noticed that when moving quickly (e.g., slide jumping) you can phase straight through enemy players.
Anyway, yes, it’s still inconsistent and broken. Given 343 has not had much communication about this despite it being a frequently discussed game-to-game issue, I would not expect a fix.
Neither of these issues existed to this extent in H5.
The melee system is all sorts of messed up to be quite honest. It’s never felt like this before in any Halo game.
All the laws of space and time go out the window once you get in melee range. It’s stupid.
For some players, when they have the sword they are able to lunge an insane distance and fast, in mere milliseconds, and there is almost no way to stop them. I have seen players flying like superman with the sword, even up onto high platforms, and kill 2-3 opponents, the lunge seems to have no cooldown, It must be a mistake, Right? I have tried and can not do what I see some players do.
Phasing through players happens to me way too much, it’s one of the several things that comes close to making this game unplayable, I must change my play style and never be up close which is difficult because with such small maps everyone is on top of each other.
The thing with being able to walk through another player, something I have encountered several times now on the other team, I run up to melee someone and outsteps another player, now there are two of them, one hiding inside the other. That type of glitch has to stop, but without addressing the removal of collision and friendly fire I don’t think there is a fix or these things would’ve been fixed.
