I played Halo Infinite Beta today and I don’t see what the point of sliding is. I mainly play Apex Legends right now and sliding serves multiple purposes. It adds a ton of depth to the movement, which I absolutely love. You can use it while you reload, heal, to keep momentum, ambush, and other things. It’s one of the things that kept me coming back to the game when I was struggling in the beginning. It’s probably the best example on how to implement that mechanic into a game.
I love movement in FPS games and definitely think it has a place in Halo. It just feels to on the rails right now to do much with it. It’s sorta similar to BF5 the way it locks into the full animation, but you can move more freely in BF5 and redirect it more aggressively. You can use it while reloading and It’s helpful for evading enemies.
I see how you can combine it with the grappling hook to keep momentum, which is pretty cool, but besides that it doesn’t add anything to the game. It just feels like its in there because most games seem to have it these days. I’m all for the depth of movement, but it needs some tweaking to be more useful and fun to use.
It’s pretty good for sliding off ledges and launching away from where the enemy thinks you will be, it also changes the way your jump works when you slide into a jump. It’s also the fastest way to move in the game with no equipment or anything.
I think you’re over estimating it’s utility. You can’t cancel the animation. It locks you into it. I find sliding in any other game like Destiny 2, BF5, Apex way more useful.
I don’t think you get a boost in speed, if it does, its not noticeable.
Sliding was specifically designed so I could smack people right in the mouth while they glide into my legs. Seriously, I’ve played enough Destiny 1 and 2 to counter a slide directly into me more often than not.
Imo it’s 343 forcing its way to make Halo feel more “modern”. Sliding is kinda like sprint in infinite…not really needed or a benefit, but keeps the “modern” feel.
