While there are a lot of complaints about progression system in general, I barely see anyone on this particular issue.
What is the point of having just 4 active challenges? It’s not like you get a new random challenge after you complete one - you already KNOW what is coming next, but you can’t progress in them because you have to finish the 4 active ones first.
This is incedribly annoying when you have 2 or sometimes 3 challenges that overlap each other.
In MCC you get your weakly challenges and you can progress through all of them at the same time.
Sometimes I have challenges like “win 2 ranked matches” as 3 seperate challenges.
Or “get 50 kills in fiesta” as active, but annoying challenges like “get 20 assists in Fiesta” / “stop a killing spree in fiesta 5 times” as inactive ones.
This way, you could avoid that players play just for very specific reasons and allow your playerbase more freedom while playing.
Simple, it forces people to engage with the game more, since you can’t progress all at once you have to keep clearing earlier ones and maybe even making you try (or buy) challenge swaps.
If you could progress all of them at once you could clear all challenges sooner and get the Weekly Reward a lot easier, making FOMO not really an issue
Whilst I’m not condoning or condemning the current system the reason is to get you to play the game more often and for longer, with more active players they have more opportunities to sell micro-transactions and in turn make more money.
It also provides a selling point for the premium battlepass as without it you only have 3 active challenges at a time, with it you have 4 active challenges at a time so from that perspective it adds ‘value’ to the premium pass.
In a way it’s a bit paradoxical, much like Ubisoft’s ‘time savers’ in their open world games. Creating a problem to allow you to sell a solution is one thing, but 343 are acknowledging the fact that people want to complete their challenges faster to get them out of the way, if the challenges were truly fun and rewarding (outside of battlepass progression and the weekly reward item) why would players want to rush to complete them?
Out of interest, but feel free not to respond if you don’t want to, would you be happier if you could complete all your challenges earlier and thus play Halo Infinite less?
Because I don’t have much time to game these days the challenges feel almost like a chore for me. Rather than completing the challenges and thinking ‘great I’ve earned something awesome’ or ‘great I can just enjoy the game now free from having to play certain gametypes or play a certain way’ a few times I’ve thought ‘great, now I don’t have to worry about Halo Infinite for another week’, the irony being I quite enjoy playing the game. Probably not what 343 was going for.
I’m sorry to say it’s the latter for me at the moment. I want to make sure I get the ultimate reward each week but then I’m happy to go back to mcc to do the challenges on there.
I really enjoy BTB or infection mainly and can’t do either in infinite right now
