343i, I do not know why with this game, the final saga of master chief, you decided to take so many steps backwards that you can’t even step up to the plate of the game that started it all. I guess its true what they say, 3 steps forward, 43 steps back.
Its been a few weeks now since the release and many multiplayer games later and I am still asking myself what is this terrible gun and why does it exist in this game? This gun is the love child between and AR and a DMR and it got all of their worst traits. To make matters worse, 343i has been bold enough to say that the commando and the BR are on par with each other and are equals. You start one side of the map with a BR and the other side of the map with a Commando. On what planet are those even starting spawn weapons?
Is there a petition I can sign to have the Commando scrapped and maybe just updated into a decent gun like a DMR?
I’ve been ignoring it in MP… but ended up using it a few times in Campaign.
The vertical recoil is a cow to get the hang of… but when you get the pacing right it certainly does some damage.
A couple of times I was able to pace my shots at the enemies chest and spam it a bit more - so that the vertical movement was still on target (even finished a couple with headshots!).
But doing the same in MP is so out of my skill range.
It’s one of the weapons they nerfed too hard in multiplayer. It’s actually one of the better weapons in the campaign. It’s most usable if you treat it like the DMR and use semi-auto fire instead of trying to burst with it.
As it is right now it’s an extremely niche gun. For me it seems to come into it’s own in an overwatch position where you’re supporting your team from a distance in objective gameplay.
A BR works better in the same role but I’ve found that it can be a good backup to a BR when you swap weapons so you can keep laying into players trying to assault a position.
It needs the damage reverted, but when used correctly it is functionally a DMR.
Pace your shots, don’t rely on full auto, and you’ll see some success with it. Less so than early on due to the damage nerf, but it still finds some use. I’ll take the Commando over an AR.
random recoil pattern, random spread. even when you pace your shots the random recoil throws you off. I don’t get how this weapon is supposed to be used.
It’s not great now. I’ve seen some pro players using it, but I’m not very good with it. I think it’s good to take shields but you need a teammate to secure the headshot. It’s pretty much a burst damage on body only weapon for me. Hilarious when you just full auto it and smash every shot.
The commando is quite possibly one of the best guns I have ever used in Halo. I would rather have a commando than a DMR.
Something that I’ve found is that some weapons are harder (Commando/Pulse Carbine) or easier (Assault Rifle/Melee Weapons) to use than the BR and people say it either is the worst or the best weapon in halo. If I can get killing sprees with a commando, that probably means that I figured out how to use this slightly more complex weapon (Hold the trigger in effective range, don’t burst).
I don’t think that there is a weapon in this game that really needs balancing right now. The commando and BR are in fact nearly equal. If they had to nerf it before by increasing the kill by 1 bullet because it was outperforming every other gun, there should be no problem right now.
Take the time to do some drills and do custom games or something with it and I guarantee that you will like it. Give it 5 minutes in training and see how you improve. It’s always harder to use a new gun, so don’t try to give up on it so easily.
