What is "That Halo Feel?"

Halo 5 beta is upon us and the community is almost perfectly split. I see a lot of differing opinions on these forums, most of which come with the phrase “Halo’s core mechanics,” or, “classic Halo gameplay,” usually when discussing the downfalls of sprint, or the addition of Thrusters, and AAs, and how much Halo 5 doesn’t feel like Halo.

So I thought I’d make this thread to shed light on the subject. In your opinion - What is Halo’s “Core Gameplay?” And does H5 achieve this?

Anything that isn’t Halol 4. And no, the Halo 5 beta doesn’t achieve this. It’s almost like 343 is trolling us with a Halo 4 Anniversary.

Anything but Halo 4. Preferably Halo 3.

That’s the thing, we all have different opinions of what Halo is to us all. Even high end competitive guys and gals could have different preferences and what they think is truly Halo.

Say like the current pros testing Halo 5. They probably think Halo is any fast paced evenly matched game where guys can jump and throw grenades and melee, shoot awesome weapons with space armor on that includes shields. Maybe some do mind the knew abilities, but some probably don’t. I mean they are making money off playing the game lol.

Other people in different parts of the community won’t only CE gameplay, some only like Halo 2 or 3. Some game in at Reach and they love it, that’s their Halo.

So in reality Halo will vary depending on each person. I know my Halo makes changes and isn’t ever boring like other FPS games to me and IMO.

Yes, this thread is exactly for posting those. The rest of your post is invalid.

Halo is…well…Halo. Everyone has their own interpretation of it, but I feel that the Halo franchise must “evolve” in order to stay fresh.

Evolution gives it some new mechanics, which some may work well and some may not. Overall, Halo is what we make of it. And in order to give it life, you have to add life to it.

Anyone have anything specific they can think of? I think “Halo” is the weird balance between everyone being nearly impossible to kill and yet trying to kill each other. That alone breeds some very interesting strategies and gameplay.

My post and the rest of it is not invalid, it pertains to the OP and the thread title. The word definition of Invalid:Not true based on erroneous information or not sound reasoning.

Unless you are using a different definition of invalid, either way you would be incorrect.

Invalid as in void and worthless because the OP already outlined what this thread was about. There was no need for you to go and thump away at SirMartyTM like that over an opinion.

He gave his opinion, seen below. Feel free to disagree with him, but yes, pretty much everything on this thread will be entirely subjective and specifying what is and is not an opinion is pretty much unnecessary. You will see things you disagree with.

It’s like an elderly nudist colony in that respect.

It’s the delivery of how he attempted to pretty much drill that what SirMartyTM posted was an opinion.

Lol, ya that’s fine, or I wouldn’t be here anyways. The nudist thing had me laughing though lol, that is a good one.

What is Halo to me? Well, that’s a tough question honestly. I never really thought about what makes Halo, well, Halo. What I do know is that each game gives off a different feeling than the previous one, and in the beginning there was a sense of evolution, of progression. The games were ever changing, ever expanding. Combat Evolved changed how we played FPS’s, Halo 2 expanded on the first games formula by adding new weapons and abilities to the mix to change up the gameplay so it wouldn’t be identical to the first game. It was meant to be bigger and better, and for its time it was. Halo 3 took a smaller step and added Equipment to the mix along with new and returning weapons and the ability to rip turrets off their tripods. But Halo 3 didn’t feel too much like an evolution, more like an expansion. Reach and 4 had the same exact feeling. They felt more like expansions than evolutions. They didn’t change anything. And while I still played them, I spent less time on them than the first two games because I felt like I was just getting more of the same. Equipment and Armor Abilities were just, there, and I didn’t really care that they existed because I didn’t really use them.

However, that has changed now. Halo 5: Guardians has brought with it a nostalgic feeling, one that I haven’t felt in years. It’s fresh and reminds me a lot of the original Combat Evolved. It’s a true evolution of Halo’s gameplay, bringing it even closer to its Arena roots. This is the game that has been sorely needed, even if many just can’t see that. And to some extent I don’t blame them. Halo 2 was a great game and Halo 3 wasn’t all that bad either. And playing Halo 2 Anniversary reminded me of just how much I loved Halo 2. But I acknowledge that Halo as it was, would not attract new players, simply feed the returning.

So to answer your question, to me, Halo is evolution personified. It isn’t meant to be groundbreaking evolution, but evolution that changes up how you play the game, that meaningfully impacts the gameplay. Combat Evolved did it, Halo 2 did it, and now Halo 5 is doing it. What I felt when I played Combat Evolved for the first time all those years ago, is exactly what I feel now when I play Halo 5. It’s evolution. That is my opinion, and you are free to disagree with my opinion if you so choose. And I in turn will respect yours.

Hmm. Interesting. So Halo, to you, is it’s ability to change and grow into something new and weird and different from the last one in some respect? Cool!

This is a Halo map.
This is one as well.

Compact, interesting designs, where all parts of the map generally interact with the other parts.

What is 343I’s new map design philosophy?

[There’s three entirely segmented parts of the map that do not interact with each other at all (and these areas aren’t all that interesting themselves to begin with). These parts are connected by long and narrow hallways that offer no interesting gameplay except people spamming down them. The hallways are practically only there to begin with in order to make the map artificially longer to accommodate for mechanics likesprint.

This is just one of the many reasons the recent Halo games no longer feel like Halo to me. This is just map design, there’s also game mechanics, the art style, the music, and so on.

Maps must warrant interaction with other areas of the map, like a single cohesive blob. Segmenting and dividing doesn’t seem to work. This is getting good.

To add to the topic: Anything that prevents a player that is on-foot from either firing a weapon (be it a stationary turret or whathaveyou), throwing a grenade or meleeing interrupts the “golden triangle” of Halo’s combat (as a result such things as sprint can not work from a fundamental standpoint - and to clarify Halo 5’s “shoulder charge” is not true melee as the player’s control is temporarily removed as he lunges forward in a single direction).

Abilities that don’t augment mobility (ie: Hologram) may be exempt from this rule as they alter playstyle without outright preventing the player’s ability to play offensively.

Additionally, a return to Halo 3’s on-map equipment (even for Halo Reach styled Armour Abilities) would do the game design good as that creates fair starts due to loadouts being removed.

What about after getting boarded? You’re stunned for a moment and can neither move in any meaningful direction, shoot well or 'nade.

True, but I was talking specifically about armour abilities/equipment. Such actions such as getting boarded is there to punish bad drivers and reward those who were able to board a moving vehicle.
