What is "Legacy Tech"?

343i said they cannot change the playlist layout in Halo 3 due to “Legacy tech”.

What does that mean?

Probably has to do with Bungie still owning certain aspects of it?

Since Bungie was a subsidiary of Microsoft when they developed Halo 3 I’d imagine Microsoft owns rights to the game including all the technology used in the creation of it.

My guess would be that 343i don’t have anyone in-house with knowledge how to make the changes and they don’t feel it’s worth pursuing.

To me “Legacy Tech” sounds like an excuse for “we are too lazy and don’t want to update the playlist because we are not making money from this”
Anyone agree with me? Why should they put the time and effort into updating the playlist if they will not benefit from it?
Pretty sad excuse to be honest. It would have been nice to see 1 last update to the playlists… oh well I hope people are going to buy the DLC if not consider the population to rise quickly and then drop again like a falling bolder off a mountain.

It means the software used to manage Halo 3’s matchmaking systems is out of date.

Since many of employees at 343i never worked on Halo 3 and would not be familiar with the UI, the basics of the software or its quirks, a lot of things could go wrong and it would take a lot longer to fix.

It would be like someone who learned to use Microsoft Word 2013 trying to use Microsoft Word 2003.

The question is, do you really want to risk Halo 3 becoming unplayable for several days or even weeks just to push out a playlist update?

Legacy Tech in regards to Halo is ODST and before. It simply means that due to legal reasons 343 cannot change anything about those games. The reason they can change Reach if they really wanted to is because they took over from Bungie while Reach was still the main game.

Legacy tech is a stealthy way that 343 uses to say that they want your money.

Don’t quote me on it, but I am pretty confident that 343i don’t see a cent from Halo 3 DLC. I can’t understand why they would, they never made Halo 3 or any of the associated DLC. Bungie did. Bungie also put the playlist restrictions in place. Stop spreading fud plz =/

No 343 doesn’t see a sent, but they do nothing to help us at all. Legacy tech is just a joke they can remove the requirement if they want to.

> they can remove the requirement if they want to.

I’d like to know how you can be so sure, do you have inside knowledge of the Halo 3 Matchmaking system that the rest of us don’t? Again, stop spreading FUD. It helps no-one

i assumed it was along these lines. 343 manages to cause a glitch every time they touch halo 4 and they made halo 4. imagine what they would do to 3 without knowing its ins and outs.

> I’d like to know how you can be so sure

They do it every day in Halo 4, and if I am not mistaken they have a bunch of Bungie staff, so…yeah i am sure!

you ARE mistaken. they have literally like 5 bungie staff. thats it.

I can probably count the Bungie staff on one hand.

5 is enough!

> 5 is enough!

Only if said staff actively used the systems/code that require to be modified. Also - Halo 4 != Halo 3

And Halo Reach != Halo 4 but they destroyed many playlists of it…

Reach was the handoff. 4 was based from a stripped and rebuilt Reach engine and used its assets. NOT Halo 3’s.

343i would not be the first to use this excuse. When Halo 3 was the newest game in the series people would ask Bungie to update Halo 2’s playlists. Shishka, the guy responsible for Halo 3’s playlist management, would simply say “We lost the keys to Halo 2”. What does that even mean? How does Bungie lose the “keys” to their own game that was updated 1 or 2 years prior.

While 343i might have a more legitimate excuse, I’m sure they could get into Halo 3’s playlists if they really wanted to.
