I saw an episode of Community and it was about Dungeons and Dragons. So is the game fun? is it just like a board game I can play with my friends or what?
There are two ways to play the game.
The serious way, where no one is really allowed to joke around, you have to take the game seriously, etc, etc. This is the sort that can escalate into those almost cult-type things.
And then, there’s the fun way, which is the way my group and I play: our Dungeon Master allows us to joke around, however we have to be paying attention to the game, and we can’t just make stupid moves for the sake of it.
And actually, I suppose there’s a gray area in between, but it’s easier for me to just leave it out. Basically, my point is: the game can be really fun, or just really goddamned serious.
I wouldn’t say it’s “just like a board game.” You have to have a Dungeon Master, you have to learn the system, you have to have your story for your adventure laid out. There are lots of pre-made adventures such as Castle Ravenloft, which is really awesome. Lots of undead and stuff in that one. You also may choose to you miniatures, and in that case, you would need a set of scenery pieces, which I think you can buy online or something, but you can always just roleplay if you’re playing 2nd Edition.
It’s actually quite complicated, so if you want to know more, I suggest you just do some research on the internet. There should be a Wikia page for it. C:
EDIT: Wow. 'Kay, I didn’t mean for this post to be so long. o-o
