where did they come from?
What is your story?
The precursors were ancient creatures who created the forerunners and who populated the milky way galaxy. It was believed by the forerunners that the precursors Mantle of responsibility would naturally pass on to them, as the successors. However the true Mantle would be given to Humanity. Which is basically undermining the intelligence of the forerunners, which is also why the Didact was so hell bent on destroying humanity.
A war broke out between the precursors and the forerunners after the true Mantle holder was announced. Many precursors died, however some escaped by going into suspended animation. However their DNA mutated into the flood. The precursors thought this would be a good way to put the forerunners in their place, correcting their behaviour. Long story short, the Halo rings were created to stop the flood aka the precursors from merging all life into the one.
