What is a "Hardcore Gamer"?

I see that phrase thrown around a lot, but I don’t really understand what it means. What makes “hardcore” gamers hardcore and “casual” gamers casual?

> I see that phrase thrown around a lot, but I don’t really understand what it means. What makes “hardcore” gamers hardcore and “casual” gamers casual?

Casual gamers are people who play for fun, and don’t really get into the nuts and bolts of gaming.
Hard core gamers are the ones that act as if their whole life is about gaming, and there are many different types of hard core gamers, there are the ones who play in MGLs, who win money and what not, and act like every game could mean life or death. And then there are some that know every thing there is to know about a game.

i dont like the subtle insults to hardcore gamers

i agree with the casual part, people who play just to have fun

i consider myself to be a hardcore gamer because i play competitively, meaning i want to win a game and score as many points as possible in said game, and it is most certainly not my whole life

I wouldn’t go as far as that with Hardcore gamers.

I consider myself to be a hardcore gamer, and I’m very casual about how I play.

I know virtually everything about the Halo Universe and the Universes of every other game I play.

A hardcore gamer, to put it bluntly is simply a someone who takes gaming very seriously or considers it to be a big a part of their life.

Gaming is my passion and I make it my goal to delve as deep within the games I play as I can possibly muster, yet I remain casual about it.

Dragon Age Origins is one of the games I’m hardcore about, I have literally done every tiny little thing I could possibly do in game from every possible origin/romance combo to every random encounter.

You can be hardcore and casual at the same time, being a hardcore gamer doesn’t go as far as you have described. You have described nothing more than try-hard gamers.

I have been gaming since the days of the NES, gaming has always been a major passion of mine. I’ve always been considered a hardcore gamer out of all of my friends due to much I love playing video games.

Please, try and remain less insulting with your posts. I am a hardcore gamer and am nothing like what you have described.

I try my hardest to play to the best of my abilities and to win. Ultimately, I only want to have fun playing my games. I do not consider myself hardcore, nor casual. I play a lot more than your “casual gamer”, but am not as fiercely competitive as the “hardcore gamer”. The definitions are too black and white, being that there’s a lot of grey area between them.

At the end of the day, does it really matter what the distinction is? Games are just meant to be played to have fun.

Casual gamers are players who know what they like and don’t like by feel.
If a game feels good, it gets played more often than not.
If a game feels bad, it doesn’t get much attention.
Playing a game rarely goes beyond this stage for the casual.

Hardcore gamers, they’re simply gamers who’ve developed a passion for something beyond the casual.
It starts out small and simple enough, but it can grow and jump through levels only a few will ever understand.
Players can be game specific, genre specific or in ever increasingly rarer cases, just a hardcore gamer.

Now it’s the type of hardcore gamer that generalises the mindset.
Game specific gamers tend to focus on perfection of execution of small-skillsets.
Genre specific gamers tend to focus on strategy and tactics over the finesse of skillsets.
Multiple-genre gamers are a mix of any and all types of gamers, but taken to extremes in a few different “categories.” In a lot of cases, they tend to be the “masochistic” gamer. The one who doesn’t just enjoy a challenge, they go out of their ways to create their own. (they’re usually the out-of-the-box thinkers).

What about the people who are ultra competitive no matter what, but still are just playing for fun?

I wasn’t trying to insult hardcore gamers, sorry if you thought of it as insulting.

“Hardcore” gamers are ones who play a game for more than just entertainment and fun, they play for the experience, which is often more of the competitive and canon side of things.

Hardcore gamer- Skilled gamers who strive for excellence and love a challenge. Typically seen has “try hards” and “no lifes” for being proficient at any game by ignorant Casual gamers. Temperament for hardcore gamers range from the coolest of people, to the angriest nerd ragers seen in existence. Many hardcore gamers don’t compete at all and just play difficult single player games (usually of Japanese origin) and are usually involved speedrunning and no hit runs (respect yo). Suffice to say, they know many things about the games they are playing such as it’s universes, canon etc.

Casual gamer: A gamer who plays for variety of reasons that differ from one another, usually playing for fun and not caring who win’s or loses. Loves to relax and enjoy their 60 buck purchase, though most are competitively inept since that is not their goal in video gaming. Some gamers who fall into this category flame hardcore gamers after getting owned though some casual gamers are really cool people too. Sadly, the casual gamer’s image is ruined by little kids who plague the online communities of most FPS games, primarily Halo and to a greater extent, Call of Duty.

Middle men: Those who are step above casual, but not quite up to par with hardcore competitive gaming. Tend to be knowledgeable of the competitive scene but does not always compete themselves but also knows how to hold their own as well and has beaten more than a few difficult games. The average gamer really, a mix of hardcore and casual :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with this one. Casual is a more play-for-fun approach while hardcore is play to win.

I still contend that a gamer is a gamer no matter what. I play for fun, that’s it. I understand that there will be losses, and there will be wins. Having said that, I am extremely competitive by nature. (If any of you saw me on a basketball court you’d understand just how unfriendly and “tryhardish” I can become). So every game of Halo that I play, I’d like to win. I’ve raged. I’ve cursed. I’ve also laughed hysterically.

Some, on this site even, have called me a “try hard” due to my ability to post around 20 kills per game. Yea, i can say without a level or narcissism that I am decent at the game. But the thing I like most of all is the game itself, and the ability to enjoy it with my friends.

I think this is true for most gamers. It’s an escape of sorts. It can be likened to reading a book. It can be likened to hanging out with friends. There are no “hardcore gamers.” Just like there are no “casual gamers.” We all enjoy what we do.

I wouldn’t consider myself a “hardcore athlete” because I’m better than most. I played a sport in college, and I also had an opportunity to travel abroad and play professionally (which I didn’t do). This is more than most athletes can say, but that doesn’t make me any different from them. We all love to do whatever it is that we do just the same.

Why segregate ourselves into these categories? It makes no sense. We all love Halo equally. We may all love different aspects of it, but really it’s that love that we have in common.

hardcore gamers arn’t all like that some justwant to win, but that still doesn’t mean its life and death, same for casual. im casual but i still try to wim, i just dont mind if we lose

I am a hard core gamer and i play a strict competitive style but in the end you can’t win them all! However outside of the gaming competitive idea there are: collectors who will buy anything hard core gamer fanatics that will buy anything thing Game related! Having a collectable that many others don’t own, Shirts, posters, magazines, prizes signed material… I call that pretty hard core as well! I guess the love for something gaming related can go casual, hard core, Fanatic/ aka Fan boy!

Sweet topic btw!

Yea and there there are those people that brave the wet and cold of mother nature just to be first for anything Halo related… I’m talking camping out for something simple. Crazy people, I tell ya. They, too could be considered “hardcore.”

Yeah thats me at every pax and game release halo related lol! RL campers! hahah!

Did you go to HaloFest? You may have seen your’s trulycamped out overnight, waiting in line!

> Did you go to HaloFest? You may have seen your’s trulycamped out overnight, waiting in line!

There’s a level beyond hardcore… in between insane and awesome…

Yeah i was the one with the halo plaque with 179 bungie signatures including the voice actors of the halo series! I also had the halo 3 back pack hahah! It was cold!
