What is a Battle Pass?

Everyone talking about this and I don’t play enough multiplayer games to understand/.

Basically the Season-Concept of TMCC, but most likely you need to buy it to unlock most of the stuff.

Me neither. I barely play anything multiplayer outside of Halo, and have thankfully never touched stuff like Fortnite, PUBG or even Destiny (apart from its demo).
Also never played MCC on PC.

I literally have no idea what a battlepass is and the answer above doesn’t really help hahaha.

A battle pass is a system which rewards the players with content like example for everyday you play halo infinite you could progress your battle pass and recieve rewards which you could spend or use to make your gear look better or perform better. It could also be the case for every match you play or win.

Most cases these sort of passes go from lvl 1 to 100 and last around 2-3 months & theres usually outright cost of something between £15-20

Best examples to look at would be destiny 2, call of duty and fortnite.

Just did a quick search on youtube.

It’s pretty much what everything has nowadays. (Including MCC.) Basically there are a bunch of rewards lined up that change out every now and then. The more you play the more rewards you get. Sometimes, like with MCC, there are challenges you can do to get more exp towards the rewards at each tier. However, with some games, not gonna mention any names, the grind is extremely high to make you want to purchase tiers to speed things up. I think the one in MCC is fine as it’s not too hard to progress through the battle pass in that game imo.

It’s if a progression system from a video game was a microtransaction.

You pay real money to unlock the battle pass, you can then earn exp (by playing the game) to level up in your battle pass, often times it goes from Lvl 1 to 100. Every time you level up your battle pass, you get a reward. The higher the level the better the reward.
The catch is battle passes are usually seasonal, meaning that you can only level up your battle pass for a short period of time. Usually around 2 or 3 months. After that period you lose the battle pass. This forces someone who buys the battle pass to put an ungodly amount hours into leveling up to get their money’s worth.

Its generally considered more player-friendly than loot boxes, since you know what you are getting before the purchase.

Just to add to what everyone’s saying, battle passes aren’t inherently good or evil. The one that MCC has is pretty good now since you can unlock stuff via PvE or PvP and it’s not too grindy. Fortnite’s last few BPs were good, and last season they had a ton of easy challenges so that you could coast through it rather quickly. Destiny 2’s BP lets you level up by doing literally anything in the game. All XP from activities, quests and bounties also go towards the pass.

Some criticisms of the BP system is that they lock things behind an artificial grind. Players may want to unlock items via challenges like “Finish Halo 3 on Legendary” instead of “Reach level 30 of Halo 3’s BP”. However there’s usually going to be some kind of grind involved, e.g. Reach didn’t have a BP but the armor system was still incredibly grindy. And on the topic of grinds, some can really be tough. Fortnite’s older BPs were an example - if you weren’t playing enough every week for the duration of the season, chances were you wouldn’t unlock the final tier of the pass. I hear that Gears 5 has a similarly grindy system.

You know it’s far easier to search online then to wait for responses on a forum. Even wikipedia has an article on Battle Passes. SMH…

An often monetized forced linear route of progression for cosmetics. That’s the best summary I can give.

Basically forcing you to unlock stuff you don’t care about before you get to the stuff you do. Most battle passes are available for a “season” then change their content, preventing you from getting stuff you did not unlock from the previous season.

I’m hopeful that 343i makes the battle pass system like MCC, allowing us to still progress through previous seasons if we want to. (Also start on which tier we want as well) I hope this is the case, ESPECIALLY if the Battle pass is monetized.

I do not want something I spent Money on but didn’t unlock in time to disappear. I played 4 seasons of Fortnite and got tired of it. Even the free Battle pass in Gears 5 prevents you from going back and unlocking what you missed from previous seasons. Whether Infinite’s battle pass is monetized or free we must be able to access the previous season’s content.

As I said in another thread, if this battle pass is monetized;

Open your wallet Spartan, bare your change, fight on, buy well.
