So I came along this Daikatana (N64) Review Part 1 - YouTube and at the start he says halo and modern warfare ruined FPS gaming, now I know we can make the jokes that the person saying it basically comes off as a stereotypical opinionated “nerd”, but it made me think did halo have any real negatives to it’s game design can you blame halo for games that did it and made it a crutch? does the positives outway the negatives? will this guy learn to get a better Microphone?
When some youtube clown drops a phrase in passing like “before Halo and MW ruined fps gaming” he’s clothing opinions as fact as he addresses his microscopically small audience trying to convince them, and probably himself, that some obscure title played by five people twelve years ago was the high-water mark for the entire genre. Now I may not have an encyclopedic knowledge of all first person shooters since the dawn of time, and I may not have, however small, a youtube audience, but I do know enough to call my opinions by their rightful name and to not pretend to have any expertise or knowledge that I don’t have. Mostly.
As for negatives attributable to Halo? How subjective do you want to get here? The person I’d really like to hear answer that question is Darklordjadow1. You should leave a comment on his youtube page and ask him.

As subjective as you can, you should leave him a post find out what he thinks then again I don’t think he will be to forthgiving
So wait… Halo is ruining it? Is this how blind people are? Halo was one of the 1st xbox FPS’s. Halo isn’t ruining anything. The FPS community is. Maybe if they didn’t expect to see what they want and nothing else, it would be fine. But many of them must see what they want, or they will spend their life complaining about the companies and “how they didn’t listen to him”
Anyways, While I’m on this topic;
I saw a video last night. It was a rather old video, and I’m not gonna say who posted it due to forum rules. It was about you shouldn’t pre-order Halo 5. So I was like, I wonder what this guy will say. So I start it, and the first thing I heard was “343i reminds me of this -Yoinking- pizza guy I talked to last night.” He was referring Halo to a pizza delivery guy. I stopped the video right there, and thought to myself. “So, this guy seems to think that 343i delivers pizza?” And he went on to say that the pizza guy didn’t have a pen, and he just kept going on about the pen. He said something like pens were outdated… That is where i stopped watching that video. THIS is where the FPS community is ruining. People who non-constructively and non-professionally criticize games. Now, maybe if he would’ve left out yelling through his mic and cussing the whole dang time, it would have been acceptable. But that is drain that the FPS genre is being flushed down, and we are helpless to stop it.
Waits for someone to get the Halo 4 Didact line

This is all very true. Also lol on the story, and yes I got the reference.

Weak reference, man. The line is “… and we are hopeless to stop it”. Plus there wasn’t really enough context to show that you were referencing the Didact, because it’s a pretty common phrase. You could have said something like “the destruction of the FPS genre has already begun, and we are hopeless to stop it”, and that would have been a lot better.
I’m just yanking your chain.
I saw that same video a while ago and now I refuse to watch any video with his name on it. The whole video is 20 minutes of him yelling his opinion into his microphone and pretending like it’s all fact, when he really has nothing to back up anything he’s saying. I still don’t even understand the pizza guy analogy. The problem is that he thinks he’s making more sense than he actually is.
He’s probably an older gamer who probably grew up playing games like Quake. I mean who else would even know about something as obscure as Daikatana?
Games like Halo and CoD completely changed the landscape of gaming. After those games came out, every shooter had to have only two weapons held at a time, recharging health, slow movement, more realistic fighting environments, so on. Shooters like Quake ceased to exist.

I’m always puzzled at how people can react to dobbins like this. It is proof that people are losing the ability to listen critically, or that they only hear what they want to hear. All he said was that putting down your hard-earned money on something completely untried and untested serves no purpose except to make developers creatively less adventurous and less apt to give you a full $60 worth of content since you have proved to them that you will buy the game no matter what. How is that, in any way, bad advice?
whispers- “everything”.
The only negative halo has brought to gaming are the illusion that luck based achievements are just hard achievements and it’s ok to base a game around them.
Like I’ve never had a problem with getting a 5 kill spree with a sword on a specific map.
But a lot of MP achievements were the equivalent of “Get a triple kill with a traffic cone on a Tuesday while glued to the ceiling and one of the guys needs to be named Jeff.”
Other than modernizing that nonsense, halo did an outstanding job of forming its own entity of “gaming” in the first person shooting universe.
Halo CE, Unreal Tournement 2004, and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory on the PC are the reasons I still game today.
love the shooters, and the hard campaign
I don’t think Halo ruined the FPS gaming. In fact, Halo made it much better.
T-bagging!!
I think the best influence it had was making it a gateway to future shooters, Halo was the lovechild of epicness and being “classy”
I know for alot of people Halo 2 and 3 are what brought them into multiplayer FPS gaming. Halo 4 was just sort of “meh”. Regardless of negative critiques, at least the boost to multiplayer console participation should be acknowledged.
Is a shame that the most videos of " Gamers" of YouTube looks like this…
