What in Forge could be worked on? (Discussion)

Hello there all! This is just a personal Log of sorts, where I am going to be talking about some Issues that I experience. I would love to talk to others to see if they also have these issues, and hopefully, bring appropriate attention to them. So please, send some love, and talk about here! Down below is a little chunk of what I see on a regular basis. I’ll try my best to make it educated for everyone who shows the interest! So here you go:

Hey there Halo Community! As we have seen will all the recent updates, new items are added constantly to our Forge Pallet! Each time, with more incredible uses, whether it be for aesthetics or gameplay. With each update, we can devise new ways to develop our maps, and improve our curiosity towards what we change achieve in the sandbox feature we have grown to love. With a great confidence, I can say that we as a community, have had our voices heard with Halo 5. For the most part, a lot of gameplay issues as well as forge-specific issues have been addressed and fixed. Not many other developers shown that kind of interest anymore, and will often just patch it slightly, hoping that a small change in code will fix said bugs. Because of this, a lot of the fixtures and blocks that experienced some lag or distortion of some sort, have been fixed.

Some of my experiences with this revolve around the bug where a reasonable distance between you and the object, will cause parts of it to despawn or become completely textureless blocks. After the last update, this issue was addressed. So I can say for a fact, that I was pleased.

  • *A map that I was in the middle of building was experiencing this issue, but after the last update, was seemingly fixed (It involved the wire pieces from the Urban category: half of the wire would disappear if you traveled a short distance away. It was frustrating, as I intended the map be used for Machinima purposes).*I still would like to say though, that there is still lighting issues, even after I turned Light Bake off. For the most part, while utilizing the map variant of Parallax, I experienced some weird shadows, and even though the structure was completely enclosed, the objects still posses a material property that shaded them, distorting their color.

  • *This map is still a work in progress, but my experience with it provides that the “Blue Planet” backdrop creates an odd shading that makes even white-coloured objects to look bordering 70-80% Grey (Just a rough estimate, as you can adjust the Grey color in intervals of 10%). So they almost become Black.*I just found this odd, seeing that this issue was directly addressed in the patch notes from the last update. My only guess is that when they said that the issue was solved, they said something along the lines of “…objects will no longer become black when placed in certain parts of the map…”.

Those are just two issues that I would like to talk about, one being solved (for the most part…), while the other… not so much. Thank you for reading, and please, have a great day Halo Community! If you’d like this to topic to continue, just post a comment with your issues, and we can 110% discuss it! Perhaps in future entries, we could discuss ideas for more objects to be added to the pallet! I’ve got a few myself! See you around!

Honestly, for me the primary issue/barrier keeping me from Forging any maps is the new control scheme difficulty. While I understand that it may be better for those more capable at the higher skill levels of Forgers, I would actually prefer to be able to go back to an older control scheme to simplify things. With the more depth Forge gets as it becomes more evolved it has also become more complex and shuns newer builders or those who might have good ideas but are unable to get accustomed to the new controls.

One of the hallmarks that made Forge in Halo 3 so great was its ease of use. I’d like to see an alternate mode, or just a simpler control scheme, to encourage the newer Halo players to try forging for themselves.

I agree. There is definitely a new level of difficulty when it comes to Forging. There is a new world of possibilities when it comes to the creation of maps. It is a bit of a timid experience coming into this forge, but just take a look at all of the recent additions. We have not only scripting, but also Trees, Bushes, Grass patches, as well as Terrain pieces. It’s crazy to see how far forge has come from Halo 3. I wouldn’t necessarily agree when you say “shuns new builders” but I do indeed agree that you have to get “accustomed to the new controls.”. Scripting is honestly complicated. Luckily though, some mighty fine forgers out there are making tutorials and guides to help out with that issue. Still though, one can’t deny this is a forge meant for Experts. But don’t let that intimidate you from giving it the old college try!

All in all, this new Forge is nothing like anything we have had before. It is difficult and really tedious, but if you put your mind to it, you really can make an awesome map! If you don’t want something to be a playable map, it is always a great idea just to mess around with the forge. There is so many things that keep being added, and they are doing a great job at listening to what we want. Getting accustomed to new features is something that we have had to do since the Halo 3 Forge. It’s evolving, and so are Forgers.

I just experienced a problem yesterday. It is my fault so I won’t complain but just listen. I forged a frigate with a vehicle bay that had scripted opening and closing hatches. I decides to weld a “emergancy exit sign” onto it so it would go up and down with it. It didn’t. So I selected the unweld option and it disconnected me from the game due to an error. Lost everything I made the last 3 hours. Learned my lesson to make saves during forge sessions now.

SORRY FOR SUCH A LATE REPLY MY FRIEND!!!

I believe that the reason this occurs, is because 64 Objects is the max amount of items that can be grouped together. The reason that this is relevant, is because every time I have tried to ungroup or unweld a group (…of items close to that number of objects), my game will crash.

The Welding function, as well as grouping options are awesome additions to the Halo 5 Forge mode, but this issue happens too frequently to be overlooked by Forgers. The biggest issue is that people are not saving as much as they really need to, even with the game’s occasional auto-save. Some may blame it on the fact that Forge lobbies run on a dedicated server. But that function has only made it possible to not need a download for ever update when the new Forge items are added to the update, nothing else in all honesty. To be quite frank, it has worked pretty well, and I am glad that with each update, I get new items. Especially with the imminent drop of corpses and texture-based blocks!!!

In my opinion, It has nothing to due with running on a online server, but solely on the Xbox One’s lack of ability towards handling the complex communication that the welded groups have. The items within the group all will run a number of codes to desynchronize their similar properties, differing (or similar) colors, their scripting (if implemented), etc.

I really don’t know any other way to put it… **If you are unwelding or ungrouping items (in a group of more than… 20 items???), the best option is the save your map. That is the only way you can know for sure that it will not crash your game.**Hope this helped, and thank you for sharing Dylan! I hope that other Forgers out there share your lesson, and can only get better from hearing it.

Hey there everyone and myself in future posts! We have just seen the current update release and while we did not get our Falcon that we wanted so much, we did get an array of new additions. And HOLY -Yoink-, did we need them!

We saw the addition of textured simple blocks, and we all know that we hated the fact that even simple blocks had pieces or curved edges (…in the previous updates). It will definitely make building both interior and exterior maps! I know personally I will be using that concrete texture

Now for the actual log:
Just yesterday while I was watching the Memories of Reach Update, I was inclined to transfer one of my drawn map ideas to ingame, and I suddenly wanted to make a bit of a cargo van. I got a few crates, a van, and a container’s lid. After welding the objects, my game stuttered for a moment, and then the game completed this action. After completing the action though, the newly made welded group was no longer able to be manipulated. When my cursor went over it, there would not be an option to grab or edit its properties. I have no idea why this is a thing but I may have figured out why this happened.

This is not my first encounter with this issue, and my friends have also had this problem. But here’s what I’m proposing is the issue. The reason that you lose control of welded groups is because a player joins your game after you’ve had a period of inactivity. Perhaps this is why the issue occurred, perhaps it is not. But it is the only lead I have. The other possibility is that the inactivity message appeared on my screen, and then I quickly saved my map the moment after closing out of the pop up. Another note is that a few moments after I tried to figure out what went wrong, the forge lobby crashed and sent me back to the main menu screen.

Thanks everyone and myself for taking the time to view this post, I hope that other Forgers out there share your lesson, and can only get better from hearing it.

Hey there everyone and myself in future posts! Since the last update I have had all sorts of fun with the new forge content and additions, and I can’t wait to get to work on some more infection-based maps. My friend Chronicler177 just started work on some Left for Dead maps too

Anywho, the reason I’m making this post is because I noticed that when the light map budget is exceeded, items that are given “light bake”; “on” properties, will not adhear to the lighting around them once placed. As well as rendered.

The reason I’m bringing attention to this, is because I turned the light bake of many other objects off, and made the lightmap budget go from 127% to 72%. After I did this, I noticed that objects that I placed after this all had proper light baking up until I hit the budget of 100%.

So the point of today’s post is that I have found that if one were having issues with certain blocks or structures not rendering lighting properly, reduce the lightmap budget below 100%, then alter the position of said structure, or change the light bake option “on” or “off”. This should fix the issue almost instantly.

This is a HUGE issue for plenty of us forger’s our there, so I hope this post may help someone at some point here in the future! If anyone has any questions, please be sure to comment below or send me a message.

Stay hydrated, and don’t forget to gyrate! Thanks again!

This may seem crazy. But when welding vehicles there’s no option to weld two or more vehicles together or weld scripted buttons. This should be added because one making a flying pelican is slightly difficult. There also needs to be a higher budget when forging. 1024 items not nearly enough since most maps require alot of objects to forge in for me.

I agree when it comes to the increasing of the amount of objects. I will admit that the object count has a very reasonable limit for some forgers, therefor, I would like to say that for bigger builds, there is just not enough budget. Making the city maps that I’ve made this last week, I can say that I know the frustrations of not having enough budget. I don’t know how a bigger budget would be implemented though, I’m sure that the limit was set because of the limits of the Xbox One’s (but I would also like to state that my xbox runs completely fine, even with the limit being reached). I also share the problem regarding the Pelican. Maybe if we had a human vehicle, we wouldn’t have an issue in the first place ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Regardless, thank you for your contribution to the thread KILL4 OOZAK! I hope that those of us who share these issues can see another awesome update where this could change

Hey there everyone and myself in future posts! Since the last log I made only a week or so ago, I have encountered yet another bug.

During the period in which the Memories of Reach REQ Pack was still available today, I logged on to Forge. I was in the middle of forging with my Xbox One running smoothly, but then Forge crashed. Just before I began forging, I looked and saw that the limited time REQ pack was still available, but then as some friends invited me to a party, and told me it was not actually available, my Halo 5 began to stutter and then crashed.

If any Forger out there has had their Halo 5 crash on them, it may because they did not properly close out of Halo 5, on a previous date. Because you are running on a previous instance of the game, it is possible when limited time REQs or changes are made to the game, that your Halo 5 will crash if they are not running on that same instance of Halo 5. Or in laymen’s terms, the Halo 5 you played the other day is different than today. If you just shut off your xbox instead of quiting the game, the next time you load the game, it might crash.

This is a HUGE frustration for plenty of us forger’s (and even just general players) out there, seeing as we don’t either save our maps enough, or just experience crashes altogether. I hope this post may help others here in the future! If anyone has any questions, please be sure to comment below or send me a message.

Stay hydrated, and don’t forget to gyrate! Thanks again!
