On the ark, if truth fired the rings he would have survived since it was out of range of the halo array, in that case what was truth going to do after that and the covenant realising that the great journey was a lie.
The ark would be overtaken by the Flood and everyone died.

Many people speculate Truth KNEW the Great Journey was fake, and that his plan was to wipe the galaxy clean of life so that he could repopulate the galaxy with his own followers.

Would he even have enough troops left after? Only his ground forces survived. Besides I think the what MythicKnight11 meant was that the common covenant soldier would know that the great journey was a lie. This might’ve caused a rebellion in itself. Could Truth have known that the Ark was outside of the Halo’s range? I thought that was only mentioned in the Forerunner trilogy books, which Truth wouldn’t have known.

Possibly. It doesn’t take as many as one would think to maintain a stable genetic population for several generations. He might have been able to convince his remaining followers that the now-empty galaxy(which would now be theirs and theirs alone) is the destination of the Great Journey. A stretch, but a lot of Halo 3’s plot was…
We don’t know precisely how much Truth knows.
If Truth fired the the rings, sentient life would be extinguished, Master Chief and the Arbiter would kill him and fire Installation 04(II). The ark would be destroyed, cripple the flood and return to a vacant galaxy. Wouldn’t change Halo 3’s story, but there would be no Halo 4 or 5.

Wait really? I always thought he knew it was a lie so he could just have power, then maybe actually turned into a maniac in Halo 3. Seriously bungie, Halo 2 he was not crazy.

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of people speculate that, and it does make sense.
I’m pretty sure his more crazy personality in Halo 3 was used as an excuse to explain his different voice-actor. (Such a shame, his Halo 2 voice was way better.)

Which raises another interesting point. Despite the fact that the Gravemind and the Flood were “safe” on Installation 00, the Gravemind chose to protect both John and the Arbiter until John deactivated the rings. Being outside the range of the rings and with possible transportation out of the galaxy, why would the Gravemind care if the rings are fired?

He couldnt overtake a galaxy without life and waitung until life has reevolved would take too long, resulting in the Flood starving out on the ark.
Game over, for everyone.
It’d be up to Chief and the remaining humans to repopulate the human race lol. Imagine Spartan 2 babies lol.
Poof, everything living in the milky way galaxy gone and the flood too would eventually starve and even sentinels and such ancient tech would eventually be gone.
this is very simple. if truth fired the rings every living being would die and truth would die because of the flood.

what remaining humans?

The ones on the Ark.
Then the rest of the story can be summed up like this “Once there was an ugly parasite. He was so ugly that everyone died. The end.”

You mean the overwhelmingly MALE population of soldiers whose numbers have been decimated fighting both the Covenant and Flood. Yeah that’s gonna end well…

Not quite vacant. Everyone seems to forget that the survivors of the Battle of Onyx would still be stuck inside Shield World 006. Whether anyone would be able to pick up their distress signal is an entirely different matter though.

they would have been killed by the flood
The covenant would realize the lie, kill all the prophets and unify again, not sure if humanity would join, or be extinguished by the covenant. It is certain that the chief would still stop the flood and everyone would return to a new galaxy. Thats my guess
