What if sprint is cosmetic only?

Re-watching the game play again. Sprint doesn’t appear to make the player run any faster. Also, very low penalty for pulling the gun back out after sprint, might actually be no penalty.

It’s possible that sprint is simply a weapon lowering animation while running, and does not affect game play.

Thoughts??

There was still sliding, maybe the trigger for sliding is just moving fast for x amount of time but more likely there’s a slight speed increase for sprint which allows sliding.

Edit:
Though there’s also still a chance that sprint is campaign only as an open world campaign would really need sprint.

I mean, we’ve only seen campaign, I don’t really care if it’s in campaign to be honest.

Why even have it in if it’s just “cosmetic”?

Maybe sliding works regardless of sprint? Interesting…

I almost have more questions now, after the event, than I did before. Hopefully we’ll get more detailed info soon.

I hear you. I think in today’s landscape, people have a need to know that they are running at full speed. Games have ingrained it in the modern player base.

Having an animation where the weapon goes down and bounces let’s the player know that they are running at full speed.

But if the animation doesn’t increase the actual forward player speed, I think we all get what we want. Level design and game play won’t be impacted by the presence of sprint. But players coming from other shooters get to see a familiar sprint animation. Win-win.

It’s definitely not just cosmetic.
I’ve made a very(!!!) rough analysis of the video, and by measuring how fast objects in the mid-range/background increase in size when moving at BMS vs sprint, I get an estimate(!!!) of sprint being roughly 22.5% faster than base movement speed.
For comparison, Reach’s sprint speed was ~57% faster, Halo 4’s was ~63% and H5G’s was 26%.
Given the very crude method I used, I assume it’s just H5G’s sprint again.

Would be hilarious if this was true, but I really can’t see them doing that.

Love the science. Do you have a way to share the analysis somehow with a video?

Not on short notice, especially given the fact that it’s almost midnight over here (and I need to get up early tomorrow for a 12+ hour work day).
I will try cooking something up over the weekend. Maybe I even find some better sources for the analysis by then. Maybe even new gameplay videos, etc.

I agree. But it’s a pretty common feature, so having it be different between MP and campaign might be jarring.

Easier than ADS though. Since ADS is gone, I think sprint could be easily disabled for multiplayer.

I could really take it or leave it, but I don’t think ‘it’s a common feature’ is a good argument any more when games like CS:Go, Valorant, and Overwatch are all massively successful and don’t feature it.

Don’t get me wrong. I want sprint to be cosmetic only because of what it does to game play.

Honestly there was very little I didn’t like about the reveal. Sprint was the only major red flag that came to mind. I kinda get why they want it in for the campaign, being that it’s on such a large scale. But I really can’t help but feel disappointed that it’s even in the game, and it worries me alot. On the bright side, it seems likely we’re not getting clamber back, thank god.

Edit: Nvm… I rewatched, and clamber is in. Christ…

I sure as hell hope so.

Curious where you fall on the sprint debate?

I actually noticed a very instant sliding in the demo, what if sprint acts like the animation that allows you to slide but doesn’t necessarily make you faster

Wait, there was sliding in the demo? How did I miss that?

It’s definitely not cosmetic, but it is much slower and less maneuverable than Reach, 4 and 5. I like the way this is implemented and I like how the campaign is turning into a halo styled doom with an open world. I need to see the multiplayer but the gameplay looks like a pretty solid compromise so far. As long as they don’t feel forced to raise all ledges to make clamber feel useful I think the game will be fine.
