So I’ve seen a few people who don’t think that Blue Team going AWOL was enough to justify the whole hunt the chief story line.
So what if he kidnapped Dr. Halsey to keep her from the UNSC?
Hear me out.
So imagine the Blue Team mission comes first, Chief has his Cortana vision, but a little later in the mission the team finds out that Jul has taken Halsey to Kamchatka, either by a data pad or 2 elites talking or something like that.
So at the end of the mission, Chief tells Infinity that he’s going to Kamchatka to extract her and Infinity says they are already lining up a team to take care of her. Blue Team doesn’t ‘like it’ and take the prowler.
Then we get the Osiris mission, however Halsey never contacted Infinity about her location. Fast forward to the end, Osiris take out Jul and the elites. At the same time, the prowler de-cloaks above the platform, with Chief, Kelly and Fred dropping in to secure Halsey. Halsey obviously freaks at the sight of Osiris, telling John that the UNSC has been trying to execute her (her arm as proof). John then steps between Halsey and Osiris, telling Blue Team to get her on to the prowler. After a short stand off between Chief and Osiris, they leave with Halsey.
Osiris could then reacquire Halsey on the Unconfirmed mission , obviously the mission would need a little bit of retooling.
I think that this would give the UNSC a more credible reason for hunting the chief down. From their perspective, he disobeyed a direct order, stole a wanted war criminal and went AWOL, then activates a large forerunner machine that devastates a colony and disappears. Obviously without having Halsey earlier they wouldn’t know that the Guardian was Cortana’s doing, and would blame the chief, like in the adds.
