Hey Spartans, so I just started playing Halo 5 and noticedthat they might be a Gap of what happened sonce Halo 4 until now. Halsey Missing an arm? her being captured by Jul? MC having a team? I know that there is a lot of books out there, im more a comic book kind of guy. Can anybody fill me in in what has happened between games. Im sorry if there is a topic just like this one, didnt have time to search. Happy new year to all.
Halsey lost her arm in Halo 4’s “Spartan Ops” mode. As for everything else, there’s not really a lot of backstory and that’s fine since you don’t need to know any of the background characters to understand the story.
Halsey lost her arm (By Palmer) and was captured by Mdama in Halo 4 Spartan Ops. As for John’s team, he had long before Halo 5’s events, in fact, it dates back to when he got kidanapped for the Orion Project, a.k.a. the Spartan-II Program.

Was this briefly explained in the Fall of Reach movie? If so then i understand it now

Yes, it is. You can also see how he develop his relationship with his squad, how he rose in the ranks and how he performs in battlefield (kinda). If you haven’t, I really recommend watching.
As pointed out go back and watch the cut scenes of Spartan Ops from H4 to learn about Halsey. They were done quite well. The movie Halo Nightfall gives you some insight on Locke as he is an agent for ONI in it. Then can read Halo Escalation for events after Halo 4, Halo New Blood about Buck getting into the Spartan program, Spartan Vale is in the book Hunters in the Dark.

Quoting from Lethal, I can firmly say in a nutshell that Halo 5’s story requires you to watch/read over 8 pieces of media, including books, live action and animations.

Yeah some hate how you have to go outside the game to get back stories and what not but I love it because to me Halo should be more than just a game. Granted the story line doesn’t always fit perfectly together but I try and take each piece for what it is rather than trying to force it into every other piece of media.

Halsey was captured and lost her arm in halo 4 spartan ops. The rest they kinda threw there with some info before hand. Hunt the truth nightfall etc. Your not really missing much they give you enough on the game to piece everything together fairly quick

I don’t mind Halo being more than just games, but I also don’t want them to go overboard and make things confusing for people who only play the games. I think one of the worst examples was the whole “Janus Key” thing from Spartan Ops being concluded in some comic book. That crossed a line, if you ask me. They could easily maintain a decent amount of continuity for people who only play Halo games, and still have plenty of backstory and lore to work with. Just saying
There Is an awful lot to keep track of. Would have made more sense to me to make the game then release all the supplemental stuff, not the other way around.

Yeah they had what could have been a perfect set up for a good story line for H5. But they didn’t realize it.
I started with H4’s campaign (I like almost every other campaign better though) and I was just as confused as you when I started Halo 5. There’s no explanation to how to the Spartan teams got together. The only parts at the beginning I understood was Locke, Jul, and Halseys missing arm.

They also “killed” the Didact in a comic book, as well as dealing with Halo Wars’ Legendary ending a comic book.
Really slimy thing to do.

It was if you got the mc colection play spartan ops in that shoukd fill most the gaps

Spartan Ops, which is part of h4 as others have saiid. That story is ‘continued’ in halo escalation. When I said continued I mean it goes all of nowhere and there’s point reading it.

Couple different sources. Fall of Reach movie (or the book) gives background on them. They reuinite in Halo Escalations but there’s no meaninginful dialogue said so I wouldn’t buy the comic for their reuinion.

Not really, most of it is just extra information that doesn’t really matter. I mean we knew next to nothing about the covenant’s motivations, johnson, miranda’s origins, etc for almost a decade and got by just fine.

The ORION Project is not the Spartan-II-Program. The ORION Project was the Spartan 1 Program that Johnson (amongst others) was part of.

INPOSIBRU!!!
Then what’s the codename for the Spartan-II?
Crysis 3 had something very good for this. The franchise had a few books and comics to bridge the gap between games, but you didn’t need to read them to understand what was happening. In the Campaign menu, there was an option called ‘Previously on Crysis’ which is a narrated cutscene that details the events of the first two games, the important information from the comic, and all you really need to know to fully understand the story of the third game. Halo 5 should’ve had something like this, and Halo 6 should as well.
