What has been done RIGHT?

We all know our disapointments in this game(most multiplayer related), but what has worked? What are the things that so far has been done well? Don’t be a sadist and say “They’ve managed to kill the fanbase well.” Just don’t. We don’t need that here.

I believe that there is hope for 343 to continue to make Halo games. Instead of pointing their shortcomings and failures, why not just state what this game has succeeded in?

IMO, multiplayer-wise, these were the successes:
Variety in weapon Sandbox
Weapons sound great
Mantis is a lot of fun to use
The lighting in Forge is awesome!
3(4 now) different forge areas
Loadouts brought a variety in weapons used

Go on, state what you think has been one of the better things about this game

Chief and Cortana’s relationship was well told. Either than that, the positives are going to be a relatively short list.

Honestly op I can’t think of much, I agree with your list except for I HATE the DMR sound it really annoys me because of how loud and sharp it is, same with the jet pack.

I guess I’d say the AA’s are pretty balanced with one another
I really enjoy the incineration cannon and binary rifle, even the bolt shot is quite unique but gets a bit annoying as a loadout weapon

Join in Progress (I’ve had a wonderful experience with it)

Variety in the weapon sandbox
Mantis
New Griffball/odd ball (Pass the ball!)
Loadouts (my opinion)
Spartan Ops Story

New armor customizations (although some of my favourites from Reach never came back)

Sound Design.
Campaign Storyline.
Animations are spot on.
Mantis was well implemented.
Forerunner Weapons are awesome.
Throwing the Odd/Grifball - SO many fun games with this feature!
Dominion is a great idea.

Can’t think of much I genuinely think is a great.

For every success I count at least two failures.

The cutscenes and characterization are the only big pluses that stand out above the ocean of inadequacy to me.

The pre-launch ad campaign

Multiplayer wise

  • Oddball throwing
  • Mantis

I can’t think of anything else

-Weapon sandbox? DMR is used more than all the other precision weapons
-The weapons do sound great tho
-I don’t like the manits, its clunky, I keep expecting to be able to jump with it for some reason
-Lighting in forge makes some areas of the map difficult to see, and its hard to control where you want the light in a map
-the original three forge maps had lack of flat land space and were limiting in terms of objects on map. Forge island makes up for this, but the lack of custom gametypes still makes halo 4 forge/customs the worst by far
-loadouts ruin the equal footing halo has set players in.

I think they really nailed some good map designs between Adrift, Solace and Haven. I’m also a fan of loadouts because I have a number of friends that feel that they can’t use precision weapons while I can’t get enough of them. No longer do we need to vote against each other about what weapons to start with, we can now just discuss the maps we want to play on.

As for Forge, I like the concept of having different settings for forge spaces, I just wish they had different tile themes for each one (Ravine is a shoe in for Forerunner skins, Impact is great for UNSC skins, etc… Where are my Covenant skins??). I’ve been having nothing but HUGE amounts of fun with Forge Island.

I was honestly expecting a semi-campy campaign. What I got was a rather intimate story. The only downside was that the fight with the Didact was… compact? I guess my fight with him was supposed to be that struggle to upload Cortana to the two consoles to overload the Didact’s shield… But I was expecting more of a knock-down drag out with the Didact, not just a simple sucker-punch.

Campaign:
Expansion of relationship between Chief/Cortana
Introduction of the Didact
The first realtime cutscene at the ending of Dawn to perfectly start campaign
Flying a pelican
Flying a long sword (long sword or broadsword, I forget)

Spartan Ops:
Side story opposed to campaign was interesting
Shutting Palmer up later on in season 1
Using custom loadouts solely for firefight-esque gameplay

Multiplayer:
Some maps worthy of being classics
SWAT (personal preference: favorite playlist since Halo 2)
Grifball (personal preference: arguably could be better but I’ve had my fun)

General:
Mantis (personal preference: I. Love. Mechs.)
(Most) weapon sounds, overall sound design
Graphics and frame rate in perfect equilibrium for the 360’s capabilities
Sprint (arguable, but speeds up gameplay for me)
Armor customization/variety

NOTE: when I say personal preference, I give a warning that I may be biased. And I’m not a forger so I can’t give any input on forge.

I like it’s ¨feel¨, but there really isn’t anything else that I like.

Not much.

I really like the sprint+AA instead of sprint as an AA. I like the Mantis. I would like the sticky detonator more if it wasn’t swapped for the GL. The boltshot is good, and the incineration cannon looks great.

I despise basically every single other decision they have made.

-Mantis
-the AR is now worth its weight to use
-Warthog looks shemxy (it sounds misplaced IMO)
-Return of the BR
-Scorpion has better Reload animation/sounds

short list… but hey, it’s something

  • AA
    Sprint
    Ordinance
    Campaign
    Graphics
    Music
    Exile
    Shatter
    Mantis
    Waypoint

343i did a splendid job with Halo 4, and I hope they further evolve the game in Halo 5.

-The Cortana and MC story.
-Some, and I really mean some, Sops missions
-Mantis is fun ( Wait till you stomp the -Yoink- out of a banshee, rare…but that smile stays with you for days )
-Halsey’s return ( while I was disappointed with the use of her in the Sops story, it is nice to see the character return to herself )
-Sops CG’s

not a damn thing

They’ve done so much right it’s awesome!
*JIP rules. No more sitting in a match 1v8.
*Pickups appearing on HUD. Rocked in Gears 3 so glad they brought it here.
*Loadouts. Love customizing my Spartan and playing to my style.
*All the sounds! Love how immersive the sounds of the guns and just walking around are. Breathtaking.
*New weapons rock! Sticky detonator is especially awesome and involves skill/strategy. Promethean guns are so much fun too.
*Sprint. I actually enjoy being able to sprint around the battlefield like a super soldier for once.
*Personal Ordnance. Fun to call in a power weapon for kicking butt. It’s feels so great.
*Many Forge spaces. All cool imo
*Oddball throwing. More strategy!

Must say though that a few of my positives come with a negative…Loadouts mean everyone and their mother have DMR’s, Plasma Pistols, and Plasma grenades. The DMR should’ve stayed in Reach. We can’t move across maps freely any more becaue of that gun. And Plasma loadouts absolutely ruin vehicle combat. Every Warthog dies in 20 seconds. Also, Personal Ordnance giving every single player Rockets or Fuel Rods or Spartan Lasers, gets ridiculous. They need to get rid of big weapons that become available as Personal Ordnance. Sadly they went forward with so many things in Halo 4, but abused those things and ruined so many awesome classic Halo mechanics. Why can’t they just balance them so we can fully embrace the changes and be competitive and use vehicles like we used to.
I hate to be negative, and I really do feel those changes ARE for the better. But they need to be better balanced to work!
