What Happened to Unlocking Everything for Free?

I see no way to obtain credits for free to unlock customizations.

Am I missing something? Please tell me I am because I could’ve swore a certain someone said that we could obtain all items by just playing the game.

I don’t remember ever hearing anything about that. Frankly, I would be surprised if that were the case. 343 want their microtransaction money.

At one point they said there would be both paid and free cosmetics for every BP level, but then that was walked back as inaccurate.

It’s been known for a long time though that not everything will be available as free unlocks, and some things would be only available through direct store purchase or through paid BP tiers.

When Halo infinite was confirmed to be free to play, that should have been your first clue that the progression will be the worst in the series. The most predatory, nonsensical, unsatisfying thing imaginable.

You were warned.

I didn’t say I wasn’t aware of this. I actually have been like you, expecting the worst. And thus, it has come to fruition. I’m looking at $9 emblems in the store. Emblems.

The free “rewards” seem to be the lamest stuff: challenge swaps (which only matter because of the crappy progression system), emblems (which shouldn’t have to be unlocked), & XP boosts.

So nothing anybody actually wants.

Also we can’t seem to chose what modes we want to play like in MCC, so getting gametype-specific challenges is gonna be complete RNG.

Campaign’s gonna be dope if 343 put as much effort into it as they did into scamming teenagers.

Emblems that you can’t even custom color. :joy:

Unfortunately, for every person who is baffled by the excessive cosmetic prices there is a little kid or a youtuber who will drop $200 just because they can, even when that money could buy 3 new full price games.

However, I don’t think they ever said everything would be free. I do remember that they said there’d be plenty to unlock but seeing as the game is F2P it goes without saying that they are going to give you as little as possible according to their psychologists and metrics to keep you happy while encouraging you to spend money.

I agree. Whales fund the free to play games, which honestly, I’m totally fine with.

My biggest frustration is not being able to scrape up some credits, which one can do in other f2p models.

Here is the clip that confused me by the way and I remembered only partially correctly. Oh, I can’t link it… look up GameSpot Halo Infinite | Multiplayer Overview and scrub the time to 7m50s.

Right? This is seriously weak. This game is such a money grab… Halo Reach you paid $60 and from the beginning had more customization options than this (as well as an excellent campaign with co-op at launch and forge.) Bringing back the Reach armors was one of the main reasons I thought I might play this MP, but seeing that they are ALL locked behind a paywall… I just played my first and last game of MP…

Don’t blame to consumer. You’re not even adding anything to the conversation. He’s asking a question.

Agreed. This was a red flag from the beginning. Sadly, the voices of the community will not be audible over the ka’ching they’re hearing as a couple hundred thousand people buy the battle pass. Man I miss when people just made video games good for the sake of them being… you know… good.

I was looking forward to playing MP, but everything good behind a paywall is bad. The cool armor sets are only in the store and can’t be unlocked. $25 for a helmet, attachment and color schema is highway robbery. When are they going to have horse armor in the store. Are the fractures going to be behind the paywall…how about new weapons or modes. How many battle pass are there going to be in a year? 3 or 4? 343 seems to have missed the fact that usually a game should have 2 types of currency…one that you can pay for and one that you can earn. There is talk about a new progression system…lets hope they fix this quickly.

Looked at the free options for unlocks and ouch, there is just about nothing.
I should’ve expected this from it going Free2Play, but good lord, I swear Fate Grand Order’s gacha is more F2P friendly.

Plenty to unlock, being only 2 helmets starting at level 81. I cannot believe this system we have.

This was actually clarified about 2 months ago. Essentially Season 1 is the only season that won’t have a free unlock at each BP level.
Guess it couldn’t be changed in time.

Future seasons will give you a free and paid item for each tier

Ah, they got this all screwed up.

Yeh this is the type of greedy nonsense that makes me want to play Infinite less. The fact that there blocking access to content and the lack of a proper rank system is not encouraging me to want to play.

Part of me is like I could play for a few months but I just don’t see myself playing this for years because of how much content is literally blocked due to greed and I think 343i knows if they don’t change then it’s going to hurt like what happened with Halo 4 at launch.

I’m happy to support 343i with buying the campaign but I feel like 343i are going too far with this and they need to give players the choice to earn credits instead of just straight up blocking content.

The free path is absolutely laughable, it’s almost all “challenge swaps”, and the little you do get doesn’t change much. On top of the horrendously slow progression it’s pretty bad.

On the armor coating front all the coatings that aren’t 10$+ are dirty, and dull shades of colors, while the 10$+ coatings are clean, bright, and vibrant. The most egregious thing is that there’s nothing special about the paid coatings. In previous games you could just color your Spartan like that save for a few exceptions. The whole “armor coatings allow us to do more for player customization” is deceptive. It only allows for more player customization monetization. They hardly use it’s new potential to apply patterns, or whatever else. It’s mostly combinations the player could have made in previous games.
