What happened to the staple Halo maps?

Halo 5 has been a roller coaster ride - it has gotten slightly better since launch but still has a lot of room to go.

I think something that would really help and something that 343 has always struggled with is map creation / design. After playing quite a bit on multiple accounts and being a pretty avid HCS follower - It appears that the most popular maps are Plaza, Rig, Coliseum (no particular order). There are a couple more I like but I don’t ever get that feeling of “holy cow Team BRS on guardian, LETS GO!” or “Pit Flag, nice!”

The remake of Haven will help (probably the only good H4 map), but we need more. Stasis? No thanks. Molten, oh god please no.

What happened to Guardian , Pit, Construct, Lockout, Blood Gulch, Zanzibar? And why do I feel like I am in a bright lego land on all of 343 maps? I know they have the capabilities - there remake of the H2 maps were amazing.

MAP REMAKE IDEAS ?
Lets hear it

Well in the community creations section thy actually have a spot for people to submit classic remakes for match making…

There should be a Classic playlist ( disabling Spartan Abilities like Ground Pound, Clamber, Stabilization jets, Sprint and Spartan Charge ) in which all the maps could be selected by Forgehub competitions. The movement properties can be decided by the Forgers for their respective maps.

I would love Guardians, Ascension, Lockout and Colossus. No particular order.

None of those maps would work in H5 due to sprint, thrust and clamber.

I don’t think that’s the point he’s trying to convey. I believe he’s referring to those maps because of how great they played in their day. There isn’t many maps that stand out in Halo 5. To be completely honest the only one that I absolutely love to play is Coliseum. There are a few good maps, but none that give me slight excitement when they show up on the screen.

Clearly their new maps are not working either. Every single DLC Arena map is atrocious for competitive play.

Plaza is that map for me from Halo 5. Absolutely love it. But the rest of the maps are very forgettable.

Also, to Moltened, I’m sure the maps can be re-sized to adjust for the added abilities, without drastically changing the overall map design.

Couldn’t agree more -
And the point I am trying to make is that 343 has no standout signature maps. These are the maps that would always win a vote (if there was vote option)

Guardian, Lockout, Ascension, Blood Gulch, Valhalla,

Great Idea

Make a classic playlist with no sprint, thrust, clamber, GP, etc. Top it off with BR starts and I bet you’d have the most popular playlist over night. Then toss in some OG maps

Spint mixed with long kill times is a nightmare for map designers.

well i wish that they will make offline forge and custom games

*H2BR as it gives a more nostalgic feel for the veterans.

Well, you say that but The Rig plays exceptionally well IMO… Truth is basically Midship and plays fine. Coliseum is cool, Plaza has interesting flow… Fathom is great and I actually like Riptide a lot. Eden is pretty good…

Idk man, there are a lot of pretty solid maps in this game, but it seems like for every good one, there’s one that I’d really rather not play. That’s my issue there… but still I think there are plenty of borderline “iconic” maps already in H5. But I would for sure consider The Rig as one of H5’s “classics.”

Truth is the best map in h5  (speaking of which, we played vs each other on it last night, Was close + fun, wish pixie wouldn’t be so aggresive when she’s almost dead). Riptide tho? Meh, i can agree to the other maps being somewhat decent.

I agree, there aren’t really any maps in this game that really love to play like there were in past Halo games, especially Halo 2 and 3. Truth is a good map, but it’s just a remake of Midship so it doesn’t really count as one of 343i’s maps. A lot of the maps are fine, but nothing more than that. None of them are absolutely fantastic like High Ground, Lockout, The Pit or Zanzibar, they’re just “fine” at best, and otherwise mediocre.

Not going to get that classic map feel whilst sprint is around I’m afraid! I totally get what you’re saying though.

some DLC maps are wonders for competitive play. And just to prove you wrong Stasis was approved for pro league because of how good it is for CTF. It even was featured in the pro league matches. As for Tyrant that map proved to work really well for Assault and would have been in the pro league if assault was finished being tweaked by then. Maps like Overgrowth and Riptide had problems with either flow or weapon placement. Those have been fixed with the new competitive versions. I am sure Overgrowth strongholds will be there for the next pro league

you have different opinions as to what good maps are. In my opinion High ground and Zanzibar are trash. I love maps that work like Empire. Empire might be my all time favorite map. It just fits my preference that is why

I just enjoy Zanzibar and High Ground since they’re fun maps and offer something more than just a regular small 4v4 arena map. I wouldn’t say that the maps don’t work, since they definitely do, they just work in different ways, you know? They’re great for one-sided objective gametypes, which do not exist in Halo 5. They’re interesting and add some good diversity to the map pool, which is something that I miss in Halo 5.

But I’m glad that you like the maps in Halo 5! Empire is probably one of the better maps in the game, to me, but still doesn’t stand out as being anything particularly special. It’s competitively balanced, sure, I’ll give it that, and it works well for both objective and slayer gametypes. But it doesn’t feel special to me, since there’s nothing interesting or unique about it.
