What happened to the Population!?!

Up until Monday, we were getting as many as 21,000 players on at one time in Reach; even more than Halo 4, in fact, which only gets about 15,000 at the most.

But as of this Monday, the population has dropped to less than 9,000 each day, and it’s becoming harder for me to find matches. At first I thought it might’ve been the release of some new game or another (perhaps Watch Dogs), but Halo 4’s population doesn’t seem to have change. What gives?

Well, people do get bored of playing the same thing over and over again.
Cough maybe adding old playlists back could shed some light?

That and finals.

I’m surprised at the 21,000 figure.

Yeah, but the sudden drop from 20,000 to 9,000 seems weird to me. It literally happened overnight.

I’m wondering if the population counter might be broken; I was playing Rumble Pit earlier, and when I first started it said 50 players, and after that it had jumped up to about 150; and after another game, it went straight back down to 50 again.

You’re definitely right about the part about Watch Dogs. It managed to make stop playing Halo (not permanently). The game is so damn fun!

What you seem not to realise is that the population counter for Reach includes all game modes (Matchmaking, Firefight, Campaign and custom games), whereas Halo 4 only shows War games. If Halo 4 counted the same way as Reach, the actual population would possibly be double what it shows.

I noticed that too and got very confused to be honest I do not know why maybe the counter might be broken due to 343 neglecting a great game that they have rights over now though sadly they probably will never go back to doing weekly playlist updates on reach. Which to me seems silly given that more players play Reach than Halo 4.

it may be just the time of day you’re playing at. then again i stopped playing reach again lately because of poor sports throwing grenades and shooting their own teammates for whatever reason and being booted until i was banned from rejoining matchmaking because they would intentionally run in front of me when i got into a vehicle. and they thing that makes me mad is i had several outstanding games go up in smoke because of unjust booting it’s kinda easy to tell when they do it on purpose

Wait, I missed that the first time; “Finals”? You mean end-of-year school exams, right? Yeah, I guess that could have something to with it…

But it still doesn’t explain why Halo 4’s population is unaffected…

I would suppose it depends on the time of day and what day it is. I don’t really hop on my Xbox until Friday and the rest of the weekend. Hopefully that’s it. Sure would stink to see Reach’s population heading downward quickly.
And, who doesn’t wanna play the same thing over and over? I can play hours of SWAT with my bro and we’re still havin fun. Or invasion or customs or ANYTHING. It’s superior to Halo 4, so I don’t see why I wouldn’t play it over and over.

subtract the numbers for these, Firefight, Campaign and custom games, and you will have a decent picture of how many play matchmaking, at a givin time.

as for numbers of say Firefight being 1000 when you enter, then after finishing the game, the lobby only showing 500, that 500 may have been playing for a lot longer a logged out for the night/morning or even went to a different part of the game or a different game
