What happened to armor functionality?

So it seems that 343 is trying to get rid of armor functionality in Spartan IV’s, as armor sets get smaller, unnecessarily positioned, and helmets seem to disregard visor placement. For a Spartan, the shoulders should be one of the most protected areas on their body, because in an ideal firing position, enemy fire will be coming towards the Spartan’s upper torso to head area, as that is generally the widest and easiest to hit part, and where missed headshots will go. Here are some diagrams.

(Sorry for the vastly different image sizes)
The red represents where the spartan will most likely be taking gunfire. Notice how a good portion of the shoulderguard is in that area? If those spartans didn’t have that shoulderguard, their direct bodysuit would be completely exposed to primary gunfire, and while this might not be a problem with shields, you’re not always going to have your shields up (RIP Kat).
It feels like armor in these new games is just there to hold shields, and identify ally from enemy. In Reach, the earliest game I had played seriously, there were a lot of big shoulder pieces, especially Commando, which offered neck protection as well from that angle. I loved to make my armor asymmetrical, with my main combination being Commando Left, ODST Right, Parafoil Chest, and CQC Helmet.
So, all I ask is that A) bigger shoulderguards in armor sets, B) asymmetrical armos sets with one shoulder bigger / different than the other, or C) allow us to customize individual armor pieces and combine them for our own personalized set. C is probably never going to happen again with 343, but I can always dream.
This is probably not very well written, please comment what you think or are wondering about.

My Anubis armor gives me protective butterfly wings.

I agree on shoulder placement for sure. Also, some of the chest pieces have like spikes that stick up in front of the neck that intersect the helmet, causing clipping. That happens no matter what helmet you have on. So that gets irritating for me.
Plus, it seems a lot of Halo 5’s helmets have that pompadour-esc forehead bump which looks odd. But thats just a personal gripe.

I always said that those forehead bumps looked like big tumors sticking out of their heads.

A lot of the shoulder armor was reduced in size or lowered down the arm because it would, functionally speaking, get in the way. Spartans couldn’t raise their arms over their heads without clipping, etc.

Like that Commando shoulder? Looks cool, but pretty ridiculous. You could smack yourself in the face with that thing.

The reason the shoulder pieces are generally smaller and lower than in the past is actually due to functionality. If you look closely in theatre you’ll see that they still sometimes clip through the torso armour. This happened far more in the past (Halo 3 in particular), and even Reach altered shoulder designs to try and avoid this.

Personally I think that for Halo 6 they should focus less on adding new designs, and more on increasing the customisability of what we have now.

Gen 2 armour is more functional.

  • Less bulky to reduce wait - Stronger shields reduces the need for armour - Multiple visor types designed to enhance a Spartans ability’s - Increased speed and mobility - Tactical packages - Multiple armour variants designed for every scenarioThe armours may look ugly but they are a lot more functional than the Gen 1 counterparts.

have a look at the venator. It is my favourite piece of armour but damn the shoulder pads are tiny.
