That was promotional…and who cares, the games great either way, stop complaining.

Marketing team was on another planet than the actual story but I was much more satisfied with the game as it is than the whole “Chief goes rouge, then gets hunted down” kind of thing.

one word response are against the rules, pretty sure that makes one letter responses even worse troll.

yea because valid questions deserve a trolly answer right. god people like you are teh reason games are going to hell.

@OP
many of the promotional content was designed around building HYPE for the game, they were not designed ot actually be faithful to the game storyline, basically 343 is relying on the hype to get commercial sales, they really didn’t think out the storyline that much in game.

this is also why the campaign has received alot of criticisms from the intelligent halo community.

Oh shut up you have no clue what your rambling on about “you are teh reason games are going to hell” Are you stupid or something, at first i couldn’t be stuffed making a post in reply to OP, then I decided to stop being lazy and say something against this guy…there is really something wrong with you if you think i’m the reason games are going to hell, next time, say something smart.

I suspect the marketing campaign was deliberately as it was in order to throw players off the scent of the story and who the real antagonist of the game was.

But it doesn’t bother me because I thoroughly enjoy the game.

Yeah the promotional material seems really off. Where and when did all the events of the first hunt the truth happen. In it chief was rouge and like barged into a peace conference to save a senator or something. During this he was a rouge agent. However in the game he doesn’t start rouge. So when did the hunt the truth mission fit in? Did he go rouge, then come back to the UNSC and then go rouge again? Also Chief seemed to know a lot more about what was going on than was ever revealed to him in the gameplay. Did cortana talk to him more times than we saw?

I second what the OP said! We got Trolled and in the worst way possible! The campaign rendered everything in Halo 4, Cortana’s sacrifice included meaningless and it tossed or retconned a massive chunk of story that was established in both Halo 4 and before that Halo 3 even! Halo 5 Guardians story wise is a disgrace to the franchise!

The reason why Halo 4 had a great story is because Bungie wrote the story for Halo 4, they just canceled it for Halo Reach and 343 Industries took Bungie’s story for Halo 4. Halo 5 is a completely original story that disregards so much of what was established and what the characters, especially in Cortana’s case stood for in the past!

Was 343 even aware that Bungie scrapped the idea of Cortana turning evil for Halo CE because they thought it was a ludicrous idea? It’s still a bad move, yet 343 didn’t do their homework! sigh Hopefully Halo 6 will make up for it and have the Diadect return, cause in the comics, Master Chief said himself that he was only contained and not dead.

i was not impressed w/ the story line, whats so ever. i get the promotional aspect of what the marketing team did to build up for the game, but they could’ve went about it so that the hype was included in the game…wouldve been sweet. & lets get real w/ the locke v chief fight scene, it was 30secs of garbage, 343needs to hire rooster teeth to choreograph fight scenes for them bcuz they are bad asf w/ that cuz RVB is ridiculously entertaining. in closing, the cutscenes were well done but only visually, Jul went down that quickly? couldn’t have made him put up a fight?! ur killing me 343…

I really care about it too!
We see the Chief vs Locke and Locke vs Chief trailers and in the game we get nothing. Other thing is the first trailer where Chief was alone in the desert. Again nothing. This is a thing why I can’t like this game’s story mode now. This is the first Halo what I don’t really like as I like the others. It’s cool game but there are many things now especially these trailer lies. I hope they will do something with these. Maybe in Halo 6 or idk but now I’m very disappointed and I feel I got bitten. :frowning:

OP, it’s the same thing as the OG Halo 2 back in '04. In H2 (Good) Bungie showed off this BA demo that had this mission to take back New Mambassa by destroying Covenant artillary weapons and securing the highway for UNSC supply convoys, the demo ended with a cutscene of dozens of Elite drop pods landing around chief and Cortana asking as Chief pulls out a plasma 'nade: “Think you can stick it?” and. the screen goes black.

Halo 2 was awesome, and didn’t need the demo mission, Halo 5 is awesome and doesn’t need stuff from a 2yr old E3 Teaser.

The marketing team were on something else. Still great marketing campaign and okay game campaign. The marketing really skewed my expectations of the campaign.

The two-sided promo advert was meant to represent the perspectives of both parties; they were never supposed to be literal. Locke’s represented his belief that mankind’s greatest hero had betrayed them all, bringing ruin to the worlds of man. John’s represented his belief that Locke was the thing standing between him and his quest to find Cortana. Both of them vilified the other because neither of them knew the full story.

I also feel the marketing campaign was to throw people off of the actual story. It’s just a shame that the marketing campaign was a lot better than the actual campaign.

What this guy said, right here. EVERYTHING, from the tv ads, the live action commercials, even Hunt the Truth, was all either misdirection or setup for the game.
We can’t pretend there wasn’t substantial and reasonable discussion over Cortana’s return/survival. And if you believed that there was going to be some button command/boss battle against Locke, then you’ll probably believe any lie ONI feeds you.

The trailers were teaser trailers. The story in teaser trailers do not have to fully relate or exist in the lore. It’s purely for hype and advertisement.

For example: Halo 3 teaser showing master chief throwing a bubble shield on the ground.

  • You don’t throw bubble shields like that in-game
  • What mission is that?
Halo 3 Believe trailer showing a massive slaughter with master chief ‘almost’ beaten.
  • Scene never existed in the game
The Halo 2 mission that wasn’t in the game. An e3 video showing Halo 2 gameplay and cutscene
  • Not in the game.

The marketing campaign was like the ones for mobile games or MMO games where the reality of the game-play has very little to do with the trailer and is usually a lot less visually appealing. Just think of fast food commercials, the food looks great in the ad but terrible when you buy it. That said the marketing campaign told (or hinted) at a story worthy of Halo, but the Game did not; even when compared to Call of Duty games, Halo 5 story is bellow that.
