Whenever the whole ‘copied COD’ debate gets going… both sides (attackers and defenders) get defensive and it ends up being a bunch of circular arguments.
Let’s just call it what it is. A lot of ‘what went wrong’ was that Halo tried to copy CoD. We understand there are other shooters that do similar things, blah blah insert one off points here and take a deep breath and just realize that it can be summarized as ‘tried to copy too many things from CoD’…
Now, 343 and -Yoink!- wanted to be successful and make money. It is a business, after all. So why not use some of the features from the game that is crushing sales records (in the genre). So… it didn’t work. That is okay and the Halo community will be just fine
IF 343 does the following:
Absolutely no counter arguments:
Better connection / hosts (which should be 100% fixed with dedicated servers
A ranking system
Longer progressive system like Reach (IF they have it at all)
Unlocks are cosmetic / cool factor only
No kill streaks / PODs
Things I feel the VAST majority wants and should be done:
AA are map pickups only
De-Scope
No perks / support upgrades
Things that are tough and need thought:
Sprint?
Loadouts minimized (weapon choice only) or gone completely
That’s my 2 cents. There are many other debatable aspects of what the game needs as well of course. These are just the ‘can’t miss’ things.
Feel free to introduce other ‘needs’ / ‘need NOTs’
I feel like the campaign was rushed so that they could not test it, leaving many glitches in the campaign that let the gamer skip entire sections of some missions. The DLC was not managed well and ended up glitching achievements. However, the main thing I think is all the extra playlists they put in matchmaking. I liked the original playlists they had better than the ones they have now.
Well, we could (and probably will) go on and on about how they shouldn’t have done this and should have done that, etc.
I think the basic problem was that 343i was handed the keys to a successful franchise and simply felt that anything they did would work, and they weren’t prepared to invest the time and effort necessary to increase the odds. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with anything that they did, but it’s clear that they did not think a lot of things through. It did not help that initial sales were so outstanding because it seemed to vindicate their assumptions, and when things started going south they seemed to believe we would eventually just come around. They brushed off our negative responses and ignored our suggestions, and tried to convince us that they were giving us what we wanted.
They have talent and good ideas. I hope they have learned that they can’t take so many liberties with an established franchise. Halo did not need to be rebooted.
> Main weapon: Own choice (DMR, BR, AR, Carbine, etc)
> Secondary: Magnum
> Frag grenades
> Armor ability: Own choice
That would be much improved. It’s addition by subtraction.
Then drop PODs / Kill streaks. Now all of the ‘absolutely not Halo’ stuff is gone.
Once the base game is at the Halo core again… THEN decide things like sprint, simpler loadout specifics, de-scope, etc.
A lot needs to be done, it’s clear. But Halo 4 is still fun and I enjoy playing it more than anything else on the market. So it’s not like we’re trying to turn Tom Goes Safari Fishing into an elite game; we have a great base.
That is a tough one for me as well. Whenever I go back and play Reach, or do something in Campaign, I really miss it. It’s really bad for me, because I use Mobility in a lot of my load outs…
