We know that Locke and FTO are hunting The Chief throughout the Halo 5 storyline. What exactly is The Chief doing during Halo 5? Is he searching for a way to bring Cortana back? Is he hunting the Guardians (whatever those are)?
That sort of ruins the fun of the campaign, don’t ya think?

I don’t believe anyone knows yet, he seems to be activating the guardians somehow…I don’t think he is trying to destroy them. What purpose they serve…we also don’t know. And that is good, they have done a good job explaining the premise of the plot…but they haven’t given up all the secrets yet. If anyone wants to avoid spoilers, it might be time to stop visiting these forums until you beat the game.
I agree, it’s nice not to know any more than we do now. With all the marketing and revealing 343i has done, surprisingly we haven’t seen much about Cortana since Chief was holding her AI chip in the reveal trailer. It’s been all about Locke and Hunt the truth.
Why does it look like Master Chief is the bad guy?

Because ONI doesn’t like their “puppets” saying no and everything is being presented out of context to shame him.
As far as the OP’s question. What is John doing during Halo 5? Playing Campaign.

From an outside perspective, Chief is ignoring orders and is involved in waking these Guardians and is therefore indirectly responsible for the mass destruction of 5 human colonies in 3 days.
We don’t know what his involvement actually is or what is objective really is, but he’s AWOL and connected to the Guardians in some way.
He’s doing stuff… things. isn’t that enough?

Nope, I want the deets.
He’s doing what everyone does on a given day. Making sure he knows where the nearest restroom is at all times.

343 aren’t going to release the story line until launch

My guess is he is trying to find Dr. Halsey, who has defected to the Covenant, so she can either fix or make him another Cortana AI and in his search for Halsey he comes across the guardians.

Well, Locke thinks he’s hunting MC.
But really, MC is hunting Locke.

The first mission is Locke’s team getting Halsey back, I think they’ll get that done.

Doesn’t mean Masterchief won’t try to get to her first.

But she’s already retrieved by the time chief has a mission.
Reading this has just created a question. ONI announced Chief is dead, I’m assuming that is to cover up the fact that he has gone AWOL. But like someone said, ONI are trying to shame him, how can they create a story portraying him as the bad guy, going around activating these Guardians, when they’ve already announced he’s dead? Or did ONI portray him as the bad guy, THEN announce he was dead?
Killing things.
